PONANT invites you to discover sumptuous landscapes and exceptional cities during a remarkable 12-day cruise between Malta, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Be inspired by this unforgettable journey aboard Le Champlain, from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast.
From Valletta, you will head for Sicily and Trapani. 750 metres (2,460 feet) up, perched on a high triangular plateau sloping down to the sea, this medieval city is a labyrinth of polished, paved narrow streets and alleyways with superb views over the Aegadian Islands and the valley.
Le Champlain will then arrive in Cagliari, capital of Sardinia and one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean; its historic centre is full of charm, with shaded stairs, small squares inundated with light and remains conjuring up its medieval grandeur.
After a call at Palma de Majorca, one of the jewels of the Balearic Archipelago, known for its four main islands that are charming, picturesque and discreet, sitting atop the clear waters of the Mediterranean like grains of sand, you will join Valencia, with its remarkable architectural splendours.
Le Champlain will then chart a course towards Cartagena where you can discover a rich ancient heritage dating back to the Carthaginians and the Romans, before sailing towards Malaga, the lively cultural capital of the Costa del Sol. From the Paleochristian and Roman remains, in the area around this famous seaside resort, to the heart of the old town, its history can be read in its buildings, in particular the 10th century castle built by the Moors. You will also have the possibility of strolling through the picturesque town of Ronda and discovering its famous Puente Nuevo.
Then, you will discover Cadiz, one of the country’s oldest cities, built on a rock and surrounded by the sea.
Your exploration will continue in Portugal, in the Algarve region at the country’s southern tip. Bewitching Lagos stands proud like a fortress in hues of ochre and orange, bordered by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In this town of nature and culture, stroll in the paved small streets of the historic centre whose Moorish and Portuguese influences create a delightful blend.
Then you will reach Lisbon, your port of disembarkation.

The painted loggia and carved corbels on the tall houses will accompany you in your explorations, and you’ll rarely be bothered by traffic. You can visit the Grandmasters palace decorated with coats of arms and frescoes. Saint-John’s cathedral and the ramparts which have guarded the city since the 16th century are also among the most emblematic sites of the city. Bathed in the cobalt waters of the Tyrrhenian sea, Trapani is the former port of the Greek city of Erice, boasting a privileged natural position in western Sicily. As you wander through its little streets, you will discover a secular cultural heritage, bearing witness to the many influences of civilisations that came here: San Lorenzo Cathedral, Maria Santissima Annunziata sanctuary, the fountain of Triton. On the shaded restaurant terraces, savour some fresh fish from the morning’s catch. Or else you can opt for a seafood couscous, a culinary legacy from their Arab neighbours.

The capital of Sardinia, Cagliari, like Rome, is built on seven hills. Its Sardinian name means “castle”, in reference to the citadel, its historic centre, which dominates the city. The old ramparts are now pleasant panoramic terraces bordering picturesque streets. The city hosted the Nuragic, Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine civilisations before the rein of the Spanish Hapsburgs and the House of Savoy. The monuments of Cagliari bear the traces of these successive dominations, such as the Bastion of Saint-Rémy or the Sainte-Marie Cathedral. On the sea front, Art Nouveau-style public monuments give way to the Poetto beach, a magnificent stretch of sand that is 8 kilometres long.

Valencia - the city of Art and Sciences. Two hearts beat in this Spanish city: one is modern, avantgarde and almost futuristic; the other is more provincial, more traditional and nostalgic. Valencia has the temperament of a great Mediterranean city whose wide avenues form a border around the old town. The city has an abundance of architectural styles that coexist harmoniously, but above all it resolutely embraces the 21st Century with the futuristic structures of its Agora congress centre and City of Arts and Sciences, emerging from a crystal blue pool.

You will also be able to cross the landscapes of vines and citrus groves stretching endlessly towards Murcia, to visit this dynamic regional capital.

Between the marina and the beaches, the seaside promenade of La Farola offers an ideal setting for strolling and relaxing. Set slightly further back, the Malagueta bullring is one of the emblematic sites of the city. From the hill overlooking the old town, one can see Gibralfaro castle and the Alcazaba, two fortified ensembles rising out from the cypresses and maritime pines. To visit Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, you will go first to the courtly plaza de la Merced. A few streets back from here, you can explore the museum dedicated to the artist, in the Buenavista palace.

With its white houses on flowery little streets, the old town is perfect for a pleasant stroll. The Plaza de los Naranjos, former focal point of the city, is near the 10th-century Arabic castle and the Church of Santa María de la Encarnación. Not far from here, you’ll be able to discover the magnificent viewpoints offered by Ronda, a picturesque town perched 700 metres (2,296 feet) high. Its Puente Nuevo bridge majestically crosses the gorges of the Guadalevin River that cuts the town in two.

From the beaches of Cortadura, to the flamenco bars of Santa Maria, through the colourful streets of la Viña, you will be amazed by this city, which is both steeped in history and extremely festive. In the medieval El Pópulo district, you will stroll along covered passages in the narrow gaps between houses. You will also be able to mosey around the lush Mina square. The star of the show is the magnificent cathedral and its dome crowned with yellow porcelain, presiding above the Ocean.

With its picturesque and age-old town centre, and the Ponta da Piedade natural site sheltering paradisiacal beaches protected by captivating limestone cliffs in hues of ochre, Lagos enthrals, fascinates and enchants. In this interesting blend between nature and culture, do not miss the chance to stroll along the small paved streets of its historic centre, surrounded by impressive Moorish ramparts and edged with traditional white houses, with decorations sculpted in the stone. In particular, you will be able to admire the Manuelian-style Governor's Castle, the 17th-century Ponta da Bandeira Fort or the Church of Santo António in Baroque architecture.
Arrival 03/05/2024 early morning
Disembarkation 03/05/2024 at 08:00
Portugal’s capital city located on the banks of the Tagus, only a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast, is a city of exceptionally rich cultural diversity. At the mouth of the river harbour, impose two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Jeronimos monastery and Belem tower. The Alfama hillside is also worth visiting: known for its fado bars and its Moorish streets, this district is the oldest one of the city and one of the most typical. Not far from there, Chiado’s elegant streets are home to big fashion labels and are an invitation to a bit of of luxury shopping.
From the pier, you will drive by coach to Erice, which is about half an hour away by road. Erice is a superb medieval village perched on a hill with spectacular views over the sea and Trapani.
Although this spot was occupied for millennia, it really developed in 831 with the arrival of the Arabs. In the Middle Ages, it reached its peak under the Normans. Called Monte San Giuliano until 1934, in Antiquity this place was dedicated to Venus and there are still traces of the ancient city walls. You will be stepping back in time to explore on foot this fascinating medieval city, with its fortress and watchtowers.
Erice still has former residences of Trapani’s wealthy families who would decamp here for the summer. Their influence can be seen in the city’s towers and fortifications and the English gardens.
After seeing the sights, you are free to wander around the streets at your leisure.
And finally, you will be given a panoramic tour of the salt flats and Trapani before boarding your ship.

From the pier, you will board your coach and drive towards the "via del sale" (the salt road) with the famous "saline" and windmills, where a brief photo stop will be made. During the 1-hour coach ride, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Mozia Island. Due to its location near the coast, and its role as an important trade city, Mozia was one of the most important Phoenician and Carthaginian settlements in the Mediterranean area.
You will arrive in Marsala, situated on Cape Boeo, which is the westernmost point of the island. Upon your arrival, a brief walking tour will give you the opportunity to discover this ancient city, founded by the Phoenicians refugees after the destruction of Mozia by the hand of Dionysius I of Syracuse. The history of Marsala is multicultural indeed, as the region was subjugated by the Romans, the Vandals and the Byzantines. Then, when the city felt to the Muslims, they called it Marsa-Allah (Port of Allah). And, when the Normans took Marsala in the 1072, they rebuilt the castle and constructed churches and convents.
The town of Marsala is also famous for a dessert wine, that it is named after it. For this reason, your next stop will be made at a local winery, the “Cantine Florio”, where, after visiting the wine cellars, you will have the opportunity to taste the Sicilian specialties such as arancini (rice balls), Sicilian bread and pizza, cannoli, accompanied by different local wines including, the Marsala.
After this tasty experience, you will head to the "Torre di Ligny" one of the most beautiful panoramic points of the city. It is a massive quadrangular-plan tower built in 1671 by Prince di Ligny. From here, you will see the Egadi Islands and two little islands, "Lazzaretto" and "Torre della Colombaia".
You will finally re-board your coach and drive back to Trapani.

From the pier, you will be taken by coach for the short drive to the town of Trapani, passing the Ligny Tower on the way, before heading to Segesta, an hour’s drive away (with photo stop) via Saline.
Called Egesta by the Greeks and Segesta by the Romans, it was one of the most advanced cities of the ancient Elymian civilisation along with Eryx (Erice) and Entella. The city was probably built between the 5th and 4th century BC, and lies on a wide plateau in a protected position between the two summits of Mount Barbaro. Today it is an important architectural site dating back to the Elmini people who originally came from Anatoly.
You will begin your tour at the Temple of Segesta, a Doric temple built from local limestone on a hill outside the ancient town. Its architecture is typical of the late 5th century. There is evidence to suggest that the temple was not completed, as the columns are unfluted and the substructure still has the bosses or nobs used for transport which should have been removed. You will then visit the theatre which dates back to the middle of the 3rd century and accommodated up to 3,000 spectators. It is on a slope at an altitude of 440 m overlooking the temple.
You will then return to the port at Trapani to board your ship.

From the pier, board your coach and start with a short panoramic drive of Cagliari. Your first stop will be made in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria. Then you will continue to Monte Urpino from where you will enjoy a panoramic view over the capital of Sardinia.
Then, you will drive to San Sperate, a 30-minute drive. Situated just near Cagliari, San Sperate is one of the most important Sardinia agricultural centres. As many remains testify, San Sperate has a very ancient history. The famous “Maschera Ghignante” (sneering mask) has been found in 1976, during one of the first archaeological excavations.
In 1967, San Sperate became a Museum-village and it now hosts many works of important Italian and foreign artists, as well as cultural meetings, theatre exhibitions and festivals. The idea of making San Sperate a Museum-village was born in 1966 by Pinuccio Sciola, who painted all the walls in white on the occasion of the Corpus Christi feast and invited several artists to paint their work on the walls of the village.
You will meet your local guide and have a guided visit of the historical centre of the village, where you can admire a large number of “Murales” and sculptures meant to embellish the village. Your walking tour will also include the garden laboratory of the world-famous sculptor Pinuccio Sciola, who promoted the murals at San Sperate and created the sound stones, both an artistic creation and a musical instrument, unique in its kind.
After enjoying a Sardinian snack, you will board your coach and drive to Cagliari, a 30-minute drive.

From the pier, board your coach and start a panoramic tour of Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia and the most important business city located on the south coast of the island, before reaching Nora.
The main gateway to Sardinia's beautiful coasts - the Costa Rei, Costa del Sud and Costa Smeralda, Cagliari boasts ornate Baroque architecture, a bustling shopping area and a mighty fort, the Bastione di San Remy, offering superb views from the battlements over the old town. Then, you will proceed to the panoramic point of Monte Urpino. From there, you will admire the beach of Poetto and Cagliari located on the opposite side.
Continue to the archaeological area of Nora, a one-hour drive. Nora lies on a promontory overlooked by a 16th century tower that stood against Saracen invaders.
You can admire the remains of the town; this was a commercial port founded by the Phoenicians with a double harbour, one side sheltered from the western wind and the other from the Mistral (northern wind). First a Carthaginian and then a Roman town, Nora declined and disappeared around the 3rd century apparently as the result of a disaster. Of the old town, you can still see remains of the Carthaginians warehouses, Roman buildings from the time of the Republic, a Carthaginian-Roman temple, large baths with splendid mosaics and a theatre, almost intact, dating back to the time of the Empire.
The system of water supply and drainage is particularly interesting, with large underwater pipes; the mosaics with very fine tesserae illustrate geometric and ornate designs. The sea around Nora still covers part of the town which sunk during an earthquake.
Finally, board your coach for the 45-minute drive to Cagliari.

After visiting the gardens, your tour will continue on foot, as you discover the Old town of Palma, whose narrow streets are home to fascinating buildings and interesting shops and cafés. Here you will have time to browse the various shops and perhaps make a purchase or two, before stopping at a local pastry shop to enjoy Mallorca's signature ensaïmada, a spiral shaped sweet bread, traditionally served plain with generous amounts of powdered sugar, but also available with a variety of fillings.

A short drive from the pier, you will find the Fundació Miró Mallorca, a museum dedicated to the work of Joan Miró. In 1981, two years before the artist's death, he and his wife, Pilar, established the foundation to showcase Miró's work and to promote contemporary art in general. It is their gift to the city that served as their home after Miró's self-imposed exile from the mainland of Franco's Spain. The museum includes a main building that houses thousands of the artist's works, a library, a sculpture garden and Miró's studio, in accordance with his wish that everything be left "as it is the moment I disappear." Your visit will allow you to view works spanning the entire length of Miró's career, from 1908 to 1983.
After visiting the foundation, embark on a panoramic tour of the city of Palma, stopping briefly at the 14th-century Bellver Castle, which has towered over the city for more than 700 years, serving various roles as a royal residence, a Mint, and a prison. It is the only circular castle in Spain complete with round towers. It was built in the 14th century for King Jaume II of Mallorca.
Continue the panoramic tour with a stop at the Cathedral for a picture and an opportunity to learn a bit of Majorcan history. La Seu, a 14th century gothic cathedral, stands in the heart of the city of Palma as the most emblematic building in Mallorca's capital. Continue your walking tour in the heart of the old town and immerse yourself in the city's beautiful atmosphere!

From the pier, you will be taken to the City of Arts & Sciences (photo stop), 15 minutes by road. Floating on azure blue water, this futuristic space began to take shape in the 1990s. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and water, the cultural complex covers nearly two kilometres at the eastern end of the Turia Gardens, along what was once the bed of the river of the same name.
You continue your excursion into the very heart of Valencia to La Plaza de la Reina and the historic centre. Depart from the pier towards the Albufera National Park.
The Albufera (small sea) is a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast. It is the main portion of the park, with a surface area of 21,120 hectares (52,200 acres). The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of fauna and flora to thrive and be observed year-round. While once a saltwater lagoon, dilution due to irrigation and canals draining into the estuary, converted it to freshwater by the seventeenth century.
The park is bordered by a pine forest that extends down to the sea. This beautiful nature reserve, surrounded by rice fields is also home to Spain’s largest lake, a paradise for migratory birds and one of Europe’s most important sites for nesting birds. You will explore these marshes on a traditional boat belonging to local fishermen. At the end of the 45-minute ride, the boat will moor close to a typical restaurant, where you will enjoy a snack and refreshment.

With your guide you will stroll from the pier, and you will be guided through the old center of Cartagena, where you will have a stop at the Market Hall.
The Murcia region produces some of the best fruit and vegetables in Spain. It is a vast agricultural area that has earned it the nickname "the orchard of Europe", and you will understand why every time you step into a store or visit a market in the region.
You will wander around and stop off at the various stalls, to admire and learn about the local produces: cheeses and charcuterie, smoked fish, fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, spices... all the colors and flavors will grab your attention. From the pier, board your coach for a 1-hour drive through the foothills of the Sierra Carrascoy to Murcia.
Settled by the Moors in the 9th century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, this bustling city offers an array of architectural delights.
Once arriving, you will visit the cathedral. Located in the heart of Murcia near the Segura River, La Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María popularly known as the Cathedral de Murcia was built on the site of the demolished great Aljama Mosque of Murcia between the 14th and 18th centuries in several architectural styles. The interior of the Cathedral is composed with three naves mainly Gothic, its main facade is Baroque, the bell tower is Renaissance and Neoclassical, and the Junterones Chapel is Renaissance.
Then, you will see the Episcopal Palace before reaching the Royal Casino of Murcia. The Royal Casino of Murcia is one of the most historic buildings, situated in the heart of the city centre not far from the cathedral. The building, which dates from 1847, is a mixture of different artistic styles. In 1983 it was declared a National historic building. The Royal Casino of Murcia Society was founded on 11th June 1847. The society first started in the mansion of Marqués and later various other properties were acquired to form the present layout. Although, this is still an acting private club, the ground floor is being kept open to public and cultural events. After a period of decline in the second half of the 20th century, the Royal Casino of Murcia Society has been revived considerably. Between 2006 and 2009 the building was completely refurbished, and for this reason the King Don Juan Carlos I of Spain granted the Casino the title ´Real´ (Royal). Refurbishment of the whole building was done, many of the rooms were restored to their original decor and the latest technology was installed throughout the building.
You will also pass through the Squares of Santo Domingo and Romeo. There, you will enjoy a stop for a tapa and a drink, before walking back to your coach and return to the pier in Cartagena.

On this tour, you will discover old Málaga and its impressive green space with its historic botanical garden.
From the pier, board your coach for the 30-minute drive to the "La Concepción" Botanical Garden . The La Concepción estate belonged to the Marquises de Casa Loring between 1850 and 1990 before being purchased by Malaga City Council. Its owners created a park where they planted exotic species brought by their commercial fleet from Latin America, the Philippines and Australia. It's a romantic garden with winding paths, ponds, waterfalls and streams. It features lush semi-tropical vegetation, rubber plants, palm trees and Araucarias. The park is also famous for its cultural heritage: the Loringiano Museum, a small Doric church, and the wisteria-covered pergola close to the palace. Officially declared a Historical-Artistic Garden in 1943, it is now also recognised as a Site of Cultural Interest. A local guide will take you through the historic part of the garden and explain everything you need to know.
After this visit, you will return by coach to the city centre, where you will begin a walking tour through the old town. You will have an inside visit of the Cathedral of the Incarnation. The construction of the Cathedral wrapped up in the latter half of the 18th century, after over 250 years of work. It has its own gardens and a beautiful patio. The Cathedral is one of the major monuments of the Renaissance in Andalusia.

From the pier, board your coach and start your 2-hour scenic drive to the city of Granada which is lying at approximately 2,100 feet (650 m) above sea level, in the shadow of the mighty Sierra Nevada. The Moors stormed across the Strait of Gibraltar in the 8th century, and they were not driven out of Granada until 1492. During the intervening centuries, they brought a refined civilisation to the south of Spain; Granada, and particularly the Alhambra, represent the zenith of Moorish culture in this country.
On arrival, you will discover the old Albayzin Quarter, part of the UNESCO world heritage, from where you will enjoy a splendid view over to the Sierra Nevada, the Darro Valley, and the Alhambra itself.
After an early tapas dinner, enjoy an exclusive visit of the Alhambra by night.
You will visit the Generalife, the small summer palace with its attractive gardens. Walk along an avenue of stately cypress trees and be delighted at the sight of trim flower-beds and box hedges, myrtle bushes and, above all, fountains.
The Nazrid Palace, named after the last dynasty of Sultans which made important reformations, is one of the finest examples of Islamic Art. Although damaged and restored over the centuries, it is not difficult to picture the place as it was in all its glory 600 years ago. The ceilings drip with stalactites in stucco, and each room appears more richly decorated than the previous one. Marvel at the delicate marble columns, graceful arcades and fine craftsmanship in the Sultans' "paradise on earth". The Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions are considered as the gems of this oriental jewel box. From its windows you can look back across to the old quarter of Albayzin and the gypsy haunts of Sacromonte.
Finally, you will return to your coach for a 2-hour transfer back to your ship.

Follow your guide on a stroll through the old town of Cadiz, visiting the most emblematic squares and monuments.
With your guide, set off from the quay for a guided tour of Cadiz, the oldest city in Europe. The old town, with its Moorish appearance, is rife with intriguing narrow, cobbled streets that open onto small squares.
You will see the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, the town hall and the 18th-century Baroque and neoclassical cathedral.
The cathedral took 116 years to build, which explains the mixture of styles. Construction began in the Baroque style and was completed in the Neoclassical style. The interior features sculptures from the old cathedral. The towers and sacristy were built last, in the 19th century. The vaults of the high altar and the choir stalls are remarkable, although the latter did not come from the cathedral. From the pier, you will leave Cadiz for a drive of approximatively two hours to Seville. The capital of Andalusia is a unique, compact and relaxing city with a rich cultural heritage, and has been a symbol of tolerance between Arabic, Jewish and Christian cultures.
Upon arrival in Seville, your guide will take you on a panoramic drive including the Plaza Americas and Plaza de España, which is covered entirely with decorative ceramics tiles, and the Maria Luisa Park.
Then, you will have a guided stroll round the ancient Jewish district of Barrio Santa Cruz, a lively and very picturesque district which evokes the romantic side of Seville. The Barrio de Santa Cruz–the city’s former Jewish quarter, where most of the synagogues are now churches–is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets, some lined with orange trees, and flower-bedecked squares. The whitewashed buildings are decorated with wrought-iron grilled windows and harbour lovely, tiled patios. Murillo, the great Spanish Renaissance painter, was born in the barrio.
Next, you will visit the Real Alcazar (Royal Alcazar), a fortified palace in the Mudejar style. Commissioned in the 10th century, the palace became the preferred royal residence of Spanish kings over the centuries. Although less grandiose than the Alhambra of Grenada, Seville's Alcazar boasts an exceptional charm and beauty of its own. Floors, ceilings and walls are works of art culminating in the rooms of Charles V and the Ambassadors Salon. The Maidens Patio (Patio de las Doncellas) is remarkable for the friezes, polychrome ceramic tiling and delicate stuccos. The palace is equally famous for its fabulous gardens where orange groves, palm trees and colourful rose beds are meticulously laid out among the fountains and other water features.
Your journey will continue with the monumental Cathedral of Seville, built in the 15th and 16th centuries on the site of a mosque. This is the third largest Gothic church in the world, after St Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London, and it literally dominates the city with its astonishing size. The interior is breath-taking in its grandeur, while the chapels are lavishly decorated. From here you will walk to the city's most emblematic monument, the Giralda next to the cathedral. Formerly a minaret from the 12th century mosque, it was altered by the architect Hernan Ruiz in the 16th century. A statue symbolising faith stands at the top of the tower and acts as a weather vane (giralda), hence the name.
After those visits, you guide will lead you to a local restaurant for a lovely tapas lunch before enjoying some free time.
You will walk back to your bus to drive back to your ship.

Depart from the pier by coach for a 45-minute ride to Mijas, considered one of the most beautiful villages of the Costa del Sol.
This white, immaculate jewel, nestles comfortably against the mountainside at 428 metres (1,400 feet) above sea level. Its nickname "Mirador of the Costa del Sol", is very fitting. The beautiful narrow streets lined with adorable white houses with terracotta roofs are the main attraction in Mijas. The tiny-whitewashed houses decorated with fences and covered with bougainvillea and jasmine give the village a special charm. Flowers in typical blue pots make them even more attractive and photogenic.
Follow your guide through the narrow, cobbled streets and head to the upper terraces to enjoy magnificent views of the town and its surroundings.
Next, your guide will lead you to the CAC Mijas, to visit this Contemporary Art Center housed in a 19th-century building given to Mijas Council, and then renovated to create an art museum. It is managed by Fundación Remedios Medina. The gallery opened in November 2013 with its impressive Pablo Picasso collection. Four years later, the centre inaugurated its Dalí exhibition. Among many other works, you will be able to admire 43 engravings, sculptures, ceramics, lithographs, and linocuts by the Malaga-born artist. The centre also boasts more than 700 works of art by famous artists including Georges Braque, Miró, Foujita, and many others. There are three rooms dedicated to the Picasso exhibition, temporary exhibitions and the Dalí exhibition.
You will have some free time to stroll along the charming streets before meeting your guide to enjoy some tapas and two local wines at the enchanting and cosy La Bodega del Pintor, a popular spot where you can relax while tasting some local specialities.

The cathedral is topped by a golden brick dome, which gives it an impressive appearance. The brilliant Manuel de Falla is buried in the crypt.
Discover its interesting interior, including the museum that belongs to the cathedral and contains the cathedral treasury.
Next, you will head to the Plaza Flores, where you will have time to enjoy a tapa and a glass of wine in a local bar.
