This journey aboard Le Dumont-d’Urville will take you into the heart of uniquely and wildly beautiful landscapes, featuring majestic volcanos, lush green valleys, isolated inlets, verdant cliffs and historic cities with multiple sources of heritage.
Your cruise will start on the island of Gran Canaria in Las Palmas, then your ship will take to the sea, sailing west to reach Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In these lands of a thousand contrasts, dominated by the emblematic silhouette of the Teide stratovolcano, discover the unique and fascinating landscapes found in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Teide National Park.
Le Dumont-d’Urville will then drop anchor at La Gomera. This tiny island with lush vegetation is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its biosphere reserve. This island is also renowned for its whistling language, Silbo, that the inhabitants use to communicate from one valley to another.
Next, Santa Cruz de La Palma will invite you to spend a moment suspended in time. Here, the accent is on authenticity and tranquillity as you succumb to the charms of its unspoilt nature and its unusual architectural heritage featuring traditional Canarian houses with brightly-coloured wooden balconies, sumptuous palaces, and religious buildings.
Your ship will then set a course northward to carry you to Madeira, a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. On this steep island covered in luxuriant vegetation, the variety of landscapes, including sheer cliffs, levadas (Madeiran aqueducts), banana plantations, and the laurel forest – Laurisilva – listed with UNESCO, never ceases to amaze visitors.
Your exploration will continue in the Algarve region at the country’s southern tip. Bewitching Lagos stands proud like a fortress in hues of ochre and orange, bordered by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In this town of nature and culture, stroll in the paved small streets of the historic centre whose Moorish and Portuguese influences create a delightful blend.
Further north, you will head towards the surprising and picturesque mediaeval city of Setúbal. Surrounded by vast parks and nature reserves featuring abundant biodiversity, between the Sado Estuary and the Serra da Arrábda whose waters shelter many dolphins, you will also fall under the charm of the historic heritage of this authentic fishing town.
Your cruise will come to an end in Lisbon, sitting on the Tagus River, distilling its one-of-a-kind charm imbued with rich history.

Étienne Gernelle
Étienne Gernelle, born 3 May 1976 in Paris. Graduate of the Institut d'études politiques de Paris. He spent a year cycling from Samarkand (Uzbekistan) to Ulan Bator (Mongolia) in 2000.
He joined Le Point in 2001. He started out as a journalist in the economics department, then successively dealt with social issues, aeronautics, defence and energy, before being appointed deputy editor in November 2008, then editor in 2010. In January 2014, at the age of 37, he became the new head of Le Point, succeeding Franz-Olivier Giesbert.

During the days spent on board, you are advised to wear comfortable clothes or casual outfits. The entire ship is air-conditioned, so a light sweater, a light jacket or a shawl may be necessary. When moving about in the public areas of the ship and the decks, light but comfortable shoes are recommended.

A stopover of sunny climes, Las Palmas is located on the north-east coast of Gran Canaria. A few streets away from Puerto de la Luz port, you’ll discover the vast Las Canteras beach, bordered with the town’s characteristic palms. You’ll find these palms are all over Las Palmas, in the streets and squares, especially on the plaza de Santa Ana in the heart of the historical district. It feels like you’ve travelled back in time here, as you stand looking at the tall houses beside the Santa Ana cathedral. Very close by, you can visit the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to the famous explorer. The museum is housed in the palace belonging to the island’s former governor. Chances are, you’ll be drawn to the covered Vegueta market to partake in some daily life along with the locals and taste some unfamiliar dishes.

The capital city of Tenerife is located on the north-east coast of the island. Close to the port is the monumental Plaza de España, bedecked with a fountain and plant sculptures. Around the plaza, you can admire the white marble Triunfo de la Candelaria obelisk, the historic casino of Santa Cruz and the majestic Guimerà theatre. Not far from here, the picturesque Iglesia de la Concepción church features the characteristic traits of Canaries architecture.

La Gomera rises from the water like a mirage. This volcanic island in the Canaries features jagged cliffs, valleys covered in palm trees, and beaches of black sand bathing in crystal-clear waters. But its greatest treasure lies at its heart: an exceptional laurisilva, a laurel forest whose prehistoric vegetation has been preserved thanks to the microclimate on the island. This unique ecosystem, common a few million years ago in the tropics, forms the Garajonay National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like the birds, the Guanches contribute to the poetry of the island too, with their whistled language called Silbo. This magical-sounding, melodious language is also listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

The capital of the island of Palma, Santa Cruz de la Palma is the pearl of the Canaries. Founded in 1493 by the conquistador Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the city has preserved a large and atypical architectural heritage from its colonial past, with its traditional Canarian houses adorned with brightly coloured wooden balconies, its cobbled streets, its sumptuous palaces and its numerous religious buildings. The Santa Catalina Castle is the symbol of the city. This 16th century military fortification helped defend the city from repeated attacks by French privateers.

This attractive capital of Madeira is located on the southern coast of the island. The walkways of the old town are lined with azulejos, or multi-coloured mosaics. If you follow these patterns, they’ll lead you to the appetising Mercado dos Lavradores market stands, the Frederico de Freitas museum, and the golden panelling of the Cathedral de la Sé. Along the waterfront, the palm tree-shaded promenade leads you to the teleféricos de Monte, Madeira's cable cars. Its panoramic cabins transport you over the city to top of Monte, where you can see the picturesque botanical garden.

With its picturesque and age-old town centre, and the Ponta da Piedade natural site sheltering paradisiacal beaches protected by captivating limestone cliffs in hues of ochre, Lagos enthrals, fascinates and enchants. In this interesting blend between nature and culture, do not miss the chance to stroll along the small paved streets of its historic centre, surrounded by impressive Moorish ramparts and edged with traditional white houses, with decorations sculpted in the stone. Portugal’s capital city located on the banks of the Tagus, only a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast, is a city of exceptionally rich cultural diversity. At the mouth of the river harbour, impose two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Jeronimos monastery and Belem tower. The Alfama hillside is also worth visiting: known for its fado bars and its Moorish streets, this district is the oldest one of the city and one of the most typical. Not far from there, Chiado’s elegant streets are home to big fashion labels and are an invitation to a bit of of luxury shopping.
Teide National Park
Tenerife, the largest island in the Canarys archipelago, is a destination full of contrasts. A place with exceptional landscapes, since 82% of the municipal territory of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered a natural area, dominated by a volcanic cone of 3,718 meters named Le Teide.
From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive inland through the lush forest area known as La Esperanza where you will have the opportunity to stop twice to take photos of the surrounding natural environment.
You will then reach El Portillo, the natural gateway to the circular mountain range, Las Cañadas. This is where the volcanic Mount Teide is located, whose summit reaches a height of 7,500 metres above ocean floor, considered the third highest volcanic structure in the world. The visual impact of the site is furhter enhanced by the atmospheric conditions that create constantly changing textures and tones in the landscape and a "sea of clouds" that forms a visually impressive backdrop.
Your tour then continues to the rock of Mirador, known also as el Dedo de Dios, which translates as "The Finger of God". You will make a photo stop in front of this incredible geological formation.
Finally, you will drive back to your ship, enjoying further breathtaking views of the lovely island of Tenerife.

Visit three uniquely compelling villages, tour a captivating wine museum and sample local vintages at an established family-owned winery on this satisfying tour.
Depart from the pier and board your coach for a 30 minutes drive to La Laguna. First, you will admire the meticulously preserved historic buildings in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the idyllic Aguere Valley and capital of the Canary Islands until 1723. You will see streets that have remained largely unchanged since the 16th century, imbuing the city's heart with a distinct character. Survey carefully maintained landmarks in this cultural and religious center, including San Fernando University and the Bishop's Palace.
Then, you will drive further inland to Tacoronte, a quaint town nestled in a richly fertile region. At the renowned Bodegas Álvaro, revel in a tasting of the finest vintages derived from Tacoronte's marvelously flavorful grape, which has brought the town its greatest acclaim as a wine producer.
Afterward, you will travel to the charming coastal village of El Sauzal, where you will tour beguiling La Baranda wine museum, housed in a 17th-century farmhouse, and learn the fascinating history of the Canary Islands' wine production. Today, you are invited to enter the oldest banana plantation on Tenerife, dating back to 1880! You'll learn about the history of the plantation and its transformation, in 2013, into the first plantation in the region to produce bananas in a completely ecological way.
Meet your guide at the pier and board your coach for a drive through the Tenerife countryside.
On arrival, you'll meet your local guide and learn about the advantages of organic methods over intensive production techniques and how essential it is to respect nature and the environment.
During the visit, you will discover not only the ecological banana production process, but also some interesting projects and initiatives, such as: the establishment of a farm to support the recovery and care of endemic bird species in the region, such as the Canary pigeon and the Canary hen. The farm also partners with several research centres at the University of La Laguna to support various field research projects. It also collaborates with a series of companies, associations, individuals and other private and public bodies involved in restoring the endemic ecosystem of the Canary Islands and working towards better management of our environment.
The plantation also produces its own organic and artisanal products, which can be purchased as samples from the farm under the Magc brand. All purchases come with their own ecological register and support their project and commitment to the environment.
You will walk to the top of the plantation, where you will enjoy the setting and the view, accompanied with a tasting of organic bananas and a liqueur to round off the experience in the best possible way.
At the end, you will re-board your coach and return to your ship.

During this excursion, you will discover Tenerife's many landscapes and varied vegetation.
After meeting your guides on the quay, you will board your bus and head for Puerto de la Cruz, passing through La Laguna, Tacoronte and El Sauzal on the west coast.
Following the coastal road, you will make your first stop at the "Mirador Humboldt" for a panoramic view of the stunning Orotava Valley. The tour continues to Puerto de la Cruz, a coastal town and the main tourist resort in the northern part of the island. You will take the bus through this popular village and its main tourist attractions.
You will then arrive at the famous botanical gardens, founded in 1788 by King Carlos III of Spain to house the hundreds of plant species brought back from America, Asia and Africa. These gardens became a kind of "acclimatization" garden for many of these delicate species from other climates. Although many have not survived, over 4,000 species remain, some of which have reached incredible proportions, such as the massive "Coussapoa Dealbata" palm or the "Palo Borracho" (drunken log), also native to South America. The garden has a herbarium of Canarian flora and is developing various research programs.
Then, on to the Sitio Litre gardens. Enjoy an unforgettable stroll through these beautiful dream gardens. The poetry of the lakes and the aquatic flora and fauna combine with the lush vegetation of the Canary Islands. At the end of the tour, enjoy a glass of local wine.
Leaving the hill of Taoro Park, you will have lunch at the very special "Meson El Monasterio" on La Montañeta hill, from where you can admire the view over the valley.
After lunch, you will head back west to the 18th-century town of Icod de los Vinos. Next to the church of San Marcos is the Parque del Drago, Icod de los Vinos' main attraction. The famous "thousand-year-old dragon tree" (although officially 800 years old) is one of the Canary Islands' most important natural, cultural and historical symbols. A garden of endemic species has been created around the tree, including small dragon trees, cactus euphorbias and sweet euphorbias.
Finally, you'll head back to the dock and your ship.

From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive to the small village of Las Hayas, your starting point for the encounter with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Garajonay National park.
The park covers some eleven percent of the island and is an important source of water for La Gomera. The forest hosts a great diversity of plant species, which are often surrounded by a sea of fog that gives the forest a magical aspect.
The park and peak are named after the doomed lovers Gara and Jonay, a sad story similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. You will pass through the oldest parts of the tropical mountain forest until you reach beautiful, terraced fields and fruit groves.
At the end, you will reach the charming village of Arure where where you will enjoy a tasting of local products at a typical Gomera restaurant.
Then, you will head back to your coach to drive back to your ship.

During this shore excursion, enjoy panoramic views and the mystery of La Laguna Grande, situated in the lush Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park!
Leaving San Sebastian, the capital of the island, you will head north to the first viewpoint, Mirador El Rejo, which offers fabulous views over the Hermigua Valley and the neighbouring island of Tenerife, with its impressive Mount Teide.
The tour will continue towards the centre of the island, and you will reach the Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park. It is a subtropical forest, found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable and mild temperatures. The hardwood trees are characterized by evergreen, glossy leaves, reaching up to 20 m in height. Many of the species are endemic to the island, which offers a rich biota of undergrowth plants, invertebrates, birds and bats.
At Laguna Grande you will have the opportunity to enjoy the enchantment of this unique forest. Upon your arrival at Chipude, you will able to enjoy refreshments at the bar.
The tour will continues southwards, and next stop will be at Agando, for a glimpse of the magnificent landscape of basalt formations of volcanic origin, such as Roques de Agando Ojiva.
During the drive back to ship, passing by La Degollada de Peraza, you will enjoy the marvellous views all around you.

From San Sebastian, the island’s capital, you will visit Gomera’s most interesting sights.
First, you will head north to the agricultural valley of Hermigua, famous for its banana plantations, where a local ecologic finca is located. Here, you will have the chance to walk through the small botanical garden, with a wide range of floral diversity.
One of its main attractions are the “palmeras guaraperas”, (the Canarian Palm Tree), which produce the famous palm honey. You absolutely must tast this sweet treat! After that, a local artisan will show you how he crafts (by hand) the baskets, using banana leaves, vines and reeds.
Round off your visit to the finca facilities with a tasting of the main dishes and products in La Gomera: gofio and cheese, washed down with a local wine.
Next, you will admire the breathtaking views at the Mirador de Agulo. Surrounded by a massive basalt wall almost 500 meters high, you might even see the nearby island of Tenerife.
On your way to Laguna Grande, you will make a short stop at the Vallehermoso viewpoint, which literally means "beautiful Valley". You will immediately realize the reason it was bestowed such a name.
The tour will continue southwards, and the next stop will be at Los Roques, for a glimpse of the magnificent landscape of basalt formations of volcanic origin such as Roque de Agando. You will then make your way back to the ship.

Although it is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries, La Palma is exceptionally steep for its size. A ridge crosses the center of the island from north to south and the entire mountain range exceeds 2000 meters in altitude.
From the pier, you will continue to the highest point of La Palma, the "Roque de Los Muchachos", located on the northern side of the "Caldera de Taburiente" National Park, at an altitude of 2,426 meters. It was designated a national park in 1954 because of its immense scientific importance and its wild and exceptional landscapes.
No matter which direction you look, the enormous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente will always offer you incredible views. This park features one of the biggest craters in the world with a circumference of 28,000 metres, a diameter of 9,000 metres and a depth of 700 metres. It´s lined with a pine tree forest, lava deposits and features furrowed by cool streams.
Before reaching the top, you will see the peculiar scene known as the “Sea of Clouds”. Each visit to Roque de los Muchachos is different, as the clouds are never the same. A photo stop will be made at Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the impressive Caldera de Taburiente.
The next stop will be at Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Centre, which is divided into 4 rooms. The first one, the Welcome Room houses the reception, the auditorium, the store and a large interactive table, where you will discover what makes up the telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Room 1 “The Canary Islands, a window to the Universe”: you will discover the reasons why the Canary Island were strategically chosen to house the most important telescopes in the world. Room 2 “Exploring the Universe”: here, you will dive into the depths of the cosmos, exploring all the corners of science and our Universe. Room 3 “Back to Earth”: in this room you will return to the municipality of Villa de Garafía, where the Visitor Centre is located. You will discover their traditions, their way of life, and their natural and cultural heritage.

On September 19, 2021, a new volcanic crater formed in La Palma. The volcano, previously known as Cumbre Vieja, erupted, completely changing the landscape west of the city and creating the new volcano Tagojaite.
Tajogaite is the name given to an area of the island of La Palma belonging to the municipality of El Paso and located south of Los Romanciaderos, near the Montaña Rajada. The toponym appears frequently from the eighteenth century onwards in local documents related to land ownership, but its use dates back to the time when the Benahoarites inhabited the island.
Hiking on the newly named Tajogaite - cracked mountain - you will almost reach the crater, walking along black ash paths lined with Canary pines.
From there, impressive views of the lava flows and the Aridane Valley await you.
Once back on the bus, you will go to the Mirador de Tajuya to enjoy more amazing views of the volcano and lava flows, before returning to Santa Cruz.

Leaving the pier, the tour takes you out towards the eastern borders of Funchal to the Botanical Gardens, one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate. There is a herbarium, as well as terraces and greenhouses with many rare and indigenous plants. The gardens provide an excellent view over Funchal.
After a visit to these gardens, the next stop will be at the cable car station for your ride to the village of Monte. Enjoy the panoramic views over the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in Monte.
The village of Monte (1,677 ft., 550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal; its 18th-century twin-towered-church is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte credited with being the source of many miracles, also inside you will find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk along one of the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system called levadas. These channels have been dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century, to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.

Leaving the pier and driving through the main area of Funchal, your first stop will be the Old Town, one of Funchal’s main tourist hotpots, popular for its historical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic aspects.
The picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets is lined by aged buildings, some dating back to the 15th century. A new project called “Arte de Portas Abertas” (Art of open doors) is a public art programme aiming to transform Funchal’s old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalise this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.
You will continue by foot with a visit to the local market “Mercado dos Lavradores”, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, as well as regional products can be found. The lower half of the market is dedicated to fish: depending on the season, you may see fresh tuna or black scabbard fish. A visit to the market is always interesting and varied, and you will catch a glimpse of the day to day life of the Madeiran people. Here you will get the opportunity to taste some local fruits in season.
You will reboard your coach for a 15-minute drive to the Sacred Art museum, housed in the old Episcopal Court of Funchal. This building from the 17th century suffered changes throughout time, mainly in the 18th century. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1955. There are two distinct sections within the museum: Flemish and Portuguese Art (paintings, sculptures and jewellery). You will also visit the Tower to enjoy a panoramic view over the city and harbour before returning to your ship.

Madeira wine is well-known for being a favourite wine “toasting” option for America’s Founding Fathers. To begin with, the island of Madeira served as a well-known port for various shipping routes going to and from the New World. England had specific legislation in place (“The British Navigation Act”), that ultimately prevented the exportation of wine (and other goods) to British colonies in the New World, unless it came on a British vessel and originated from a British port of call. However, the island of Madeira was exempt from this pesky law and Madeira wine became a “staple” wine on the vessels bound for the American colonies.
Once arriving, you will visit the vineyards of a traditional working Quinta, a unique property that still possesses the characteristics of a farm or estate as they once existed in Madeira. Bought by John Blandy in 1826, the first Blandy to visit Madeira, and the person to have established the now well-known Madeira wine business, this rural oasis is located near the centre of Funchal. This estate houses rich flora gardens and centenary old trees collected from all over the world, as well as a vineyard, whose produce is used for Blandy’s Madeira wine.
You will continue your tour to The Blandy's Wine Lodge. You will enjoy a private guided tour which covers the making of barrels at the Cooperage, ageing in the Canteiro, the transformation of grapes into Madeira wine, satinwood storage vats, and includes a visit to the private museum with unique items from Madeira wine history. The wine lodge was once a 17th-century monastery, it now provides an ageing store for thousands of litres of the highest quality Madeira wines, namely Blandy’s Leacock’s, Cossart Gordon and Miles.
After your guided visit with one of the Madeira Wine guides, a lecture will be given. Finally, to complement this experience, you will enjoy tasting Blandy’s Madeira wines accompanied with some local snacks.

This tour gives you the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful gardens in Madeira!
Visit the Tropical Monte Palace gardens which is an excellent place to see a comprehensive collection of beautiful trees from all over the world. Its history dates back to the 18th century. The garden has a ban area of 70.000 m2 and is amongst the finest on the island. It also has several lagoons with exotic fish “Koi”. You will have the opportunity to contemplate some marvellous panels with tiles that date back from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The gardens contain thousands of different plants from various parts of the world, something for each visitor to enjoy!
The tour then continues and takes you along the winding road which offers spectacular views en route to Eira do Serrado. Here a short ascent on an easy path leads to the summit of Pico do Serrado (about 3,000 feet). There are superb views of Madeira's highest peaks and the Curral das Freiras village below, a hamlet so remote that the Santa Clara Convent Nuns used it as an escape from the pirate raids of the 16th century.

Walk through the promenade of Lagos, with its characteristic geometric Portuguese cobblestones, towards the old Municipal market and historical area. Visit two of the most famous squares in Lagos, Gil Eanes and Prince Henry the Navigator, as you make your way towards the church of St. Anthony and the Lagos Museum.
The Church of Santo António boasts a surprisingly rich interior full of gilt carvings and a tile effigy to the saint himself. Nearly 600 years posthumously, St. Anthony was even given the honorary rank and salary of Lieutenant Colonel in the Portuguese Army as Prince Regent Juan VI declared it was the benevolence of the saint that protected the city and people of Lagos from Napoleon I.
The Museum Dr. José Formosinho takes you on a journey through the History of Lagos and the Algarve. It also includes a set of works assembled by the founder of the Museum, the Cabinet of Curiosities. Another highlight of this museum is the original, small-scale model of an imaginary village made by Pedro Reis, which is on permanent display.

After a short bus journey, you will arrive at Setúbal Castle, a fortress constructed in 1590 by Filipe I, which offers beautiful views over the ocean and is home to a chapel decorated with blue and white azulejos. From there, you will cross the magnificent Arrábida Natural Park, with its diverse scenery featuring wooded hills, picturesque beaches and cliffs. The summit of the Serra da Arràbida mountain range is crossed by the Estrada de Escarpa, one of the region’s most spectacular roads.
You will pass by Sesimbra, a fishing village, with a stop for lunch near the beach and to make the most of the views of the medieval castle.
You will then be driven to the medieval Palmela Castle. The Order of Santiago established its seat in this castle, then adding a church and a monastery to it. Built on a rocky outcrop, it has spectacular viewpoints over the Serra da Arràbida mountain range, the Sado Estuary and the Tróia Peninsula. The bus will also take you to a wine cellar that you will visit before tasting the local wines made from the Muscat grape.

Discover the Palácio da Bacalhôa, a 15th-century jewel that belonged to the Portuguese royal family, and its art collection and the wines that now forge the reputation of this property.
The vibrant Quinta da Bacalhôa is located 30 minutes by bus from the port of Azeitão. As rare architectural evidence of the times, the property shows the multiple influences of the locals. Moorish and Renaissance styles interweave in the shade of the Morocco-inspired towers, the stunning multicoloured azulejos and gardens that are ideal to get lost in.

About one hour from Lisbon by coach, is the mediaeval town of Óbidos, one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal.
Quite close to the capital and located on high ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos has had a strategic importance in the territory. It had already been settled prior to the Romans’arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century, and it became part of Casa das Rainhas (Queens’Estate), who improved and enriched it throughout the various dynasties. This is one of the main reasons for the high concentration of churches.
You will find a well preserved castle within the walls, and a maze of streets and white houses that are a delight to stroll amongst. Along with the Manueline doors, the colourful window boxes and the small squares, many fine examples of religious and civil architecture from the town’s golden days provide a host of reasons for making a visit.
Santa Maria Main Church, the Misericórdia Church, the Church of São Pedro, the Pillory and, beyond the walls, the Aqueduct and the round-shaped Senhor Jesus da Pedra Sanctuary, are just some of the landmarks that warrant an attentive visit.

After breakfast and check-out, your walking guided visit will be first focus on Vegueta, Las Palmas’s old colonial area.
Next, enjoy a drive through one of the greenest valleys of the island, “Valle de Agaete” to reach a local winery. An intense citrus scent will meet your noses just getting off your transportation. The winery is blessed with lime and lemon trees scenting the entrance.
On the way, the owner will talk you through all the local vegetation and plants : crops, trees, flowers, and plants as far as your eyes can reach.

Tenerife, the largest island in the Canarys archipelago, is a destination full of contrasts. A place with exceptional landscapes, since 82% of the municipal territory of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered a natural area, dominated by a volcanic cone of 3,718 meters named Le Teide.
From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive inland through the lush forest area known as La Esperanza where you will have the opportunity to stop twice to take photos of the surrounding natural environment.
You will then reach El Portillo, the natural gateway to the circular mountain range, Las Cañadas. This is where the volcanic Mount Teide is located, whose summit reaches a height of 7,500 metres above ocean floor, considered the third highest volcanic structure in the world. The visual impact of the site is furhter enhanced by the atmospheric conditions that create constantly changing textures and tones in the landscape and a "sea of clouds" that forms a visually impressive backdrop.

Today, you are invited to enter the oldest banana plantation on Tenerife, dating back to 1880! You'll learn about the history of the plantation and its transformation, in 2013, into the first plantation in the region to produce bananas in a completely ecological way.
Meet your guide at the pier and board your coach for a drive through the Tenerife countryside.
On arrival, you'll meet your local guide and learn about the advantages of organic methods over intensive production techniques and how essential it is to respect nature and the environment.
During the visit, you will discover not only the ecological banana production process, but also some interesting projects and initiatives, such as: the establishment of a farm to support the recovery and care of endemic bird species in the region, such as the Canary pigeon and the Canary hen. The farm also partners with several research centres at the University of La Laguna to support various field research projects. During this excursion, you will discover Tenerife's many landscapes and varied vegetation.
After meeting your guides on the quay, you will board your bus and head for Puerto de la Cruz, passing through La Laguna, Tacoronte and El Sauzal on the west coast.
Following the coastal road, you will make your first stop at the "Mirador Humboldt" for a panoramic view of the stunning Orotava Valley. The tour continues to Puerto de la Cruz, a coastal town and the main tourist resort in the northern part of the island. You will take the bus through this popular village and its main tourist attractions.
You will then arrive at the famous botanical gardens, founded in 1788 by King Carlos III of Spain to house the hundreds of plant species brought back from America, Asia and Africa. These gardens became a kind of "acclimatization" garden for many of these delicate species from other climates. Although many have not survived, over 4,000 species remain, some of which have reached incredible proportions, such as the massive "Coussapoa Dealbata" palm or the "Palo Borracho" (drunken log), also native to South America. The garden has a herbarium of Canarian flora and is developing various research programs.
Then, on to the Sitio Litre gardens. Enjoy an unforgettable stroll through these beautiful dream gardens. The poetry of the lakes and the aquatic flora and fauna combine with the lush vegetation of the Canary Islands. At the end of the tour, enjoy a glass of local wine.
Leaving the hill of Taoro Park, you will have lunch at the very special "Meson El Monasterio" on La Montañeta hill, from where you can admire the view over the valley.
After lunch, you will head back west to the 18th-century town of Icod de los Vinos. Next to the church of San Marcos is the Parque del Drago, Icod de los Vinos' main attraction. The famous "thousand-year-old dragon tree" (although officially 800 years old) is one of the Canary Islands' most important natural, cultural and historical symbols. A garden of endemic species has been created around the tree, including small dragon trees, cactus euphorbias and sweet euphorbias.
Finally, you'll head back to the dock and your ship.

From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive to the small village of Las Hayas, your starting point for the encounter with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Garajonay National park.
The park covers some eleven percent of the island and is an important source of water for La Gomera. The forest hosts a great diversity of plant species, which are often surrounded by a sea of fog that gives the forest a magical aspect.
The park and peak are named after the doomed lovers Gara and Jonay, a sad story similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. You will pass through the oldest parts of the tropical mountain forest until you reach beautiful, terraced fields and fruit groves.
At the end, you will reach the charming village of Arure where where you will enjoy a tasting of local products at a typical Gomera restaurant.
Then, you will head back to your coach to drive back to your ship.

During this shore excursion, enjoy panoramic views and the mystery of La Laguna Grande, situated in the lush Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park!
Leaving San Sebastian, the capital of the island, you will head north to the first viewpoint, Mirador El Rejo, which offers fabulous views over the Hermigua Valley and the neighbouring island of Tenerife, with its impressive Mount Teide.
The tour will continue towards the centre of the island, and you will reach the Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park. It is a subtropical forest, found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable and mild temperatures. The hardwood trees are characterized by evergreen, glossy leaves, reaching up to 20 m in height. Many of the species are endemic to the island, which offers a rich biota of undergrowth plants, invertebrates, birds and bats.
At Laguna Grande you will have the opportunity to enjoy the enchantment of this unique forest. Upon your arrival at Chipude, you will able to enjoy refreshments at the bar.
The tour will continues southwards, and next stop will be at Agando, for a glimpse of the magnificent landscape of basalt formations of volcanic origin, such as Roques de Agando Ojiva.

From San Sebastian, the island’s capital, you will visit Gomera’s most interesting sights.
First, you will head north to the agricultural valley of Hermigua, famous for its banana plantations, where a local ecologic finca is located. Here, you will have the chance to walk through the small botanical garden, with a wide range of floral diversity.
One of its main attractions are the “palmeras guaraperas”, (the Canarian Palm Tree), which produce the famous palm honey. You absolutely must tast this sweet treat! After that, a local artisan will show you how he crafts (by hand) the baskets, using banana leaves, vines and reeds.
Round off your visit to the finca facilities with a tasting of the main dishes and products in La Gomera: gofio and cheese, washed down with a local wine.
Next, you will admire the breathtaking views at the Mirador de Agulo. Surrounded by a massive basalt wall almost 500 meters high, you might even see the nearby island of Tenerife.
On your way to Laguna Grande, you will make a short stop at the Vallehermoso viewpoint, which literally means "beautiful Valley". You will immediately realize the reason it was bestowed such a name.

The capital of La Gomera is built around a charming historic centre consisting of shaded squares, pastel-coloured buildings bleached by the sun and pedestrian streets dotted with boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Christopher Columbus stayed here during his journey towards the New World and each of the explorer's (real or imaginary) steps in the town has been well-documented for visitors. Stroll around this town, which can be encapsulated in two words: serenity and tranquillity.

Although it is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries, La Palma is exceptionally steep for its size. A ridge crosses the center of the island from north to south and the entire mountain range exceeds 2000 meters in altitude.
From the pier, you will continue to the highest point of La Palma, the "Roque de Los Muchachos", located on the northern side of the "Caldera de Taburiente" National Park, at an altitude of 2,426 meters. It was designated a national park in 1954 because of its immense scientific importance and its wild and exceptional landscapes.
No matter which direction you look, the enormous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente will always offer you incredible views. This park features one of the biggest craters in the world with a circumference of 28,000 metres, a diameter of 9,000 metres and a depth of 700 metres. It´s lined with a pine tree forest, lava deposits and features furrowed by cool streams.
Before reaching the top, you will see the peculiar scene known as the “Sea of Clouds”. Each visit to Roque de los Muchachos is different, as the clouds are never the same. A photo stop will be made at Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the impressive Caldera de Taburiente.
The next stop will be at Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Centre, which is divided into 4 rooms. The first one, the Welcome Room houses the reception, the auditorium, the store and a large interactive table, where you will discover what makes up the telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Room 1 “The Canary Islands, a window to the Universe”: you will discover the reasons why the Canary Island were strategically chosen to house the most important telescopes in the world. Room 2 “Exploring the Universe”: here, you will dive into the depths of the cosmos, exploring all the corners of science and our Universe. Room 3 “Back to Earth”: in this room you will return to the municipality of Villa de Garafía, where the Visitor Centre is located. From Mirador de la Cumbrecita, admire the volcanic lands and verdant peaks of Caldeira de Taburiente National Park, a protected area classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, you will also have the chance to explore its lush forests, providing a sanctuary for the unique biodiversity, before reaching the caldera that watches over the island: Caldeira de Taburiente. Lined with Canary Island pines, it is one of the largest craters in the world, with a diameter of eight kilometres (5 miles).
After enjoying a panoramic view of the island from Mirador de la Concepcion, you will take a moment to visit the Church of Our Lady of the Snows (Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves), dedicated to the patron saint of the island. On September 19, 2021, a new volcanic crater formed in La Palma. The volcano, previously known as Cumbre Vieja, erupted, completely changing the landscape west of the city and creating the new volcano Tagojaite.
Tajogaite is the name given to an area of the island of La Palma belonging to the municipality of El Paso and located south of Los Romanciaderos, near the Montaña Rajada. The toponym appears frequently from the eighteenth century onwards in local documents related to land ownership, but its use dates back to the time when the Benahoarites inhabited the island.
Hiking on the newly named Tajogaite - cracked mountain - you will almost reach the crater, walking along black ash paths lined with Canary pines.
From there, impressive views of the lava flows and the Aridane Valley await you.
Once back on the bus, you will go to the Mirador de Tajuya to enjoy more amazing views of the volcano and lava flows, before returning to Santa Cruz.

This volcano hike is feasible for everyone, but due to the fresh volcanic ash in two short, steeper sections on the way back it is a bit more strenuous than on the way up. Leaving the pier, the tour takes you out towards the eastern borders of Funchal to the Botanical Gardens, one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate. There is a herbarium, as well as terraces and greenhouses with many rare and indigenous plants. The gardens provide an excellent view over Funchal.
After a visit to these gardens, the next stop will be at the cable car station for your ride to the village of Monte. Enjoy the panoramic views over the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in Monte.
The village of Monte (1,677 ft., 550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal; its 18th-century twin-towered-church is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte credited with being the source of many miracles, also inside you will find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk along one of the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system called levadas. These channels have been dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century, to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the emerald green paradise valley with captivating views over quaint isolated villages and Camacha. The flower lined levada trickles along underneath a canopy of Eucalyptus and Oak trees. Enjoy the abundant flora and patchwork landscape that makes this walk delightful.

Leaving the pier and driving through the main area of Funchal, your first stop will be the Old Town, one of Funchal’s main tourist hotpots, popular for its historical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic aspects.
The picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets is lined by aged buildings, some dating back to the 15th century. A new project called “Arte de Portas Abertas” (Art of open doors) is a public art programme aiming to transform Funchal’s old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalise this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.
You will continue by foot with a visit to the local market “Mercado dos Lavradores”, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, as well as regional products can be found. The lower half of the market is dedicated to fish: depending on the season, you may see fresh tuna or black scabbard fish. A visit to the market is always interesting and varied, and you will catch a glimpse of the day to day life of the Madeiran people. Here you will get the opportunity to taste some local fruits in season.
You will reboard your coach for a 15-minute drive to the Sacred Art museum, housed in the old Episcopal Court of Funchal. This building from the 17th century suffered changes throughout time, mainly in the 18th century. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1955. There are two distinct sections within the museum: Flemish and Portuguese Art (paintings, sculptures and jewellery). You will also visit the Tower to enjoy a panoramic view over the city and harbour before returning to your ship.

Madeira wine is well-known for being a favourite wine “toasting” option for America’s Founding Fathers. To begin with, the island of Madeira served as a well-known port for various shipping routes going to and from the New World. England had specific legislation in place (“The British Navigation Act”), that ultimately prevented the exportation of wine (and other goods) to British colonies in the New World, unless it came on a British vessel and originated from a British port of call. However, the island of Madeira was exempt from this pesky law and Madeira wine became a “staple” wine on the vessels bound for the American colonies.
Once arriving, you will visit the vineyards of a traditional working Quinta, a unique property that still possesses the characteristics of a farm or estate as they once existed in Madeira. Bought by John Blandy in 1826, the first Blandy to visit Madeira, and the person to have established the now well-known Madeira wine business, this rural oasis is located near the centre of Funchal. This estate houses rich flora gardens and centenary old trees collected from all over the world, as well as a vineyard, whose produce is used for Blandy’s Madeira wine.
You will continue your tour to The Blandy's Wine Lodge. You will enjoy a private guided tour which covers the making of barrels at the Cooperage, ageing in the Canteiro, the transformation of grapes into Madeira wine, satinwood storage vats, and includes a visit to the private museum with unique items from Madeira wine history. The wine lodge was once a 17th-century monastery, it now provides an ageing store for thousands of litres of the highest quality Madeira wines, namely Blandy’s Leacock’s, Cossart Gordon and Miles.
After your guided visit with one of the Madeira Wine guides, a lecture will be given. Finally, to complement this experience, you will enjoy tasting Blandy’s Madeira wines accompanied with some local snacks.

Visit the Tropical Monte Palace gardens which is an excellent place to see a comprehensive collection of beautiful trees from all over the world. Its history dates back to the 18th century. The garden has a ban area of 70.000 m2 and is amongst the finest on the island. It also has several lagoons with exotic fish “Koi”. You will have the opportunity to contemplate some marvellous panels with tiles that date back from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The gardens contain thousands of different plants from various parts of the world, something for each visitor to enjoy!
The tour then continues and takes you along the winding road which offers spectacular views en route to Eira do Serrado. Here a short ascent on an easy path leads to the summit of Pico do Serrado (about 3,000 feet). Walk through the promenade of Lagos, with its characteristic geometric Portuguese cobblestones, towards the old Municipal market and historical area. Visit two of the most famous squares in Lagos, Gil Eanes and Prince Henry the Navigator, as you make your way towards the church of St. Anthony and the Lagos Museum.
The Church of Santo António boasts a surprisingly rich interior full of gilt carvings and a tile effigy to the saint himself. Nearly 600 years posthumously, St. Anthony was even given the honorary rank and salary of Lieutenant Colonel in the Portuguese Army as Prince Regent Juan VI declared it was the benevolence of the saint that protected the city and people of Lagos from Napoleon I.
The Museum Dr. José Formosinho takes you on a journey through the History of Lagos and the Algarve. It also includes a set of works assembled by the founder of the Museum, the Cabinet of Curiosities. Another highlight of this museum is the original, small-scale model of an imaginary village made by Pedro Reis, which is on permanent display.

After a short bus journey, you will arrive at Setúbal Castle, a fortress constructed in 1590 by Filipe I, which offers beautiful views over the ocean and is home to a chapel decorated with blue and white azulejos. From there, you will cross the magnificent Arrábida Natural Park, with its diverse scenery featuring wooded hills, picturesque beaches and cliffs. The summit of the Serra da Arràbida mountain range is crossed by the Estrada de Escarpa, one of the region’s most spectacular roads.
You will pass by Sesimbra, a fishing village, with a stop for lunch near the beach and to make the most of the views of the medieval castle.
You will then be driven to the medieval Palmela Castle. The Order of Santiago established its seat in this castle, then adding a church and a monastery to it. About one hour from Lisbon by coach, is the mediaeval town of Óbidos, one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal.
Quite close to the capital and located on high ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos has had a strategic importance in the territory. It had already been settled prior to the Romans’arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century, and it became part of Casa das Rainhas (Queens’Estate), who improved and enriched it throughout the various dynasties. This is one of the main reasons for the high concentration of churches.
You will find a well preserved castle within the walls, and a maze of streets and white houses that are a delight to stroll amongst. Day 1 - Lisbon pier/Comporta region
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.
Transfer of around 1 h 15 minutes from Lisbon Pier to the Sublime Comporta 5* Hotel. This is located in Muda, 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) from Comporta, a preserved region offering a setting that features dunes, pine trees, vineyards and rice fields. It is the ideal location for a rejuvenating break.
This morning, you will head towards the territory of Herdade da Comporta, a natural reserve that brings together several hamlets. In these wild landscapes between the ocean and endless rice fields, you will visit the Rice Museum, a site devoted to rice cultivation and the impact of this crop on the region’s history.
You will then set off to visit the vineyards where you will attend a tasting session. This experience will let you learn more about the specific features of grape cultivation in this unique environment whose sandy soil is subject to the influence of the ocean.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant or at the Sublime Comporta Beach Club depending on opening days.
Back at your hotel (around a 15-minute drive), enjoy some free time to relax. Let yourself be tempted by the hotel’s well-being facilities or by an optional activity at an extra charge.

As an option and at an extra charge, during your afternoon time at leisure, set off on a 1 h 30 horseback ride to explore the paradisiacal coast that runs along your hotel’s region, featuring pine forests and dunes.
Day 2 – Comporta region
After breakfast, you will be driven to the departure point for a walk that will last around 2 hours and during which you will be introduced to bird watching. This narrow strip of land between the ocean and the rice fields is home to a large variety of species.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant or at the Sublime Comporta Beach Club depending on opening days.
The afternoon will be dedicated to discovering a typical Alentejo village, Alcacer do Sal, which is built along the Sado River. On your guided walk through the narrow streets of the old town, you will see the castle and the museum, among other sites. You will not leave before a taste of local colour, these sweets made of pine nuts that are called “pinhoadas”.
Transfer back at your hotel (around a 30-minute drive).

Day 3 - Comporta region/Lisbon airport
After breakfast and check-out, time at leisure depending on your flight schedule.
You will then be transferred to the airport in time for check-in for the PONANT selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
