Welcome to the largest and most African of the Cape Verde islands. This tour will take you to the heart of the recent capital, Praia, where you will discover the contrast between its history and the modern atmosphere that reigns there.

From the pier, you will meet your guide and drive to "the Plateau". There, you will start your guided walking tour of the historical centre of Praia. You will visit the Ethnological Museum which is located in a historic Portuguese colonial building. Your guide will tell you more about the way of life of the first inhabitants.

Afterwards, you will go to Cidade Velha which you will reach after 30 minutes of driving. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city is the original capital of the Cape Verde Islands and the cradle of the slave trade.

Ribeira Grande, now known as Cidade Velha (“old city”), is the oldest city in Cape Verde Islands and was the first European settlement in the tropics. A colony was founded in 1462 by Antonio de Noli and prospered due to its prominent position in the slave trade. It became a city in 1572 and got a cathedral which was completed late in 1693. The great explorers Christopher Colombus and Vasco de Gama both stopped here on their respective expeditions, Christopher Colombus on his third voyage to the Americas in 1498, and Vasco de Gama on his way to India in 1497.

Before arriving, you will visit the ruins of the old Fort of Real do Sao Filipe, which overlooks the Cidade Velha. It was built in 1590 to protect Ribeira Grande after a devastating attack by the pirate Francis Drake. This defence soon proved insufficient and in 1712 the city was sacked again by the French pirate Jacques Cassart.

Once in the heart of Cidade Velha, you will discover the remains left by the first Portuguese settlers. You will visit its Cathedral, then you will walk along the Rua Banana and the Pelourinho, a pillory dating from the 16th century. Near these picturesque cobblestone streets, you will enjoy a coffee to the sound of the drums of a batuco group that will offer you a traditional dance performance.

After discovering the soul of this island, you will return to the port of Praia and your ship.

Mindelo off road adventure

From the pier, you will board your 4x4 for a panoramic tour of the island of São Vicente, through breathtaking landscapes.

In the heart of unspoilt nature, your adventure will take you from the north coast to the south coast to Palha Carga Beach - a one-kilometre-long beach just for you. On the way, you will stop at Assomada to take pictures from the highest viewpoint on the island.

After enjoying a stop at a black sand beach and crossing the agricultural valley of the island, Ribeira de Calhau, you will stop inside the small crater of Topim and observe the uninhabited islands of Santa Luzia, Raso and Branco. Enjoy the beauty of the turquoise waters and white sand of Saragarça Beach and be seduced by the natural caves along the coast, formed at the end of a lava flow, with the backdrop of the Viana crater on your left and the view of Santa Luzia on your right. With a little luck, you may have the privilege to see ospreys (fish eagles).

Then, you will visit the fishing village of Calhau, with its colourful wooden sailboats and its typical Cape Verdean atmosphere before returning to you ship.

This excursion is a panoramic tour (3 hours’ drive with photo stops) in an all-terrain vehicle and involves walking on rough roads with some steps. The vehicles used are local and do not have air conditioning or a sound system. We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Your scenic tour through Mindelo will have you discovering the heart of the city. It will take you past the Praia Nova, the Palacio de Povo, down the main street called Rua de Lisboa, and along the bustling Rua de Praia, lined with colourful colonial houses and monuments influenced by the Portuguese and British cultures.

Along the winding roads leading to Monte Verde, the islands tallest peak, you will take pleasure in admiring the variety of colours offered by the island's stones and rock formations. Make your way along the winding roads of Monte Verde, the highest peak on the island, to enjoy a panoramic view of most parts of the island: the city of Mindelo, the long beaches of yellow sand juxtaposing black volcanic rock, and Baia das Gatas, a bay with turquoise waters, famous for its annual music festival that gathers large parts of the country.

During a stop at Praia Grande beach, delight in the sound of the waves of the Atlantic as you walk along the sand, and taste the local sugarcane liqueur called grog. Finally, before returning to Mindelo to hear some of the Cape Verdean music for which the island of Sao Vicente is renowned, you will cross the former agricultural zone that was once vital to the island but which is now reduced due to the lack of rainfall.

This excursion involves some time spent walking on cobblestone streets with some steps to negotiate. The coaches used are local buses with no air conditioning or sound system. Euros (banknotes only) are accepted in the souvenir shops in the cultural centre, but credit cards are not. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and bringing a jacket with you as it can get windy at the top of the mountain. Swimming is not allowed. The tasting is included in your tour.

Santo Antao, the authentic island

From the pier, board your van for a transfer to the national harbour, from where you will board a ferry for the one-hour ride to the neighbouring island of Santo Antao.

Upon your arrival, you will start your exploration with a panoramic drive along the coast to the greenest, almost tropical valley on the archipelago, the Paúl Valley, 1 ½ hour drive.

Here, you will start a moderate hike through splendid nature and through different plantations, enjoying the lushness of this valley and the friendliness of the population and their rural way of living. This valley is a main provider of the archipelago's produce, which includes bananas, potatoes, lettuce, papaya, mangos and breadfruit.
In the middle of this peaceful scenery, you will take a break to enjoy some of the fresh fruit that you can readily find in here. In this spectacular valley, you will see lots of sugarcane, which is used to make the local liquor, called Grogue. After your hike, you will visit a traditional sugar cane distillery with a "trapiche", a large press. You will have an introduction into the local grogue rum. No visit would be complete without a tasting.

Back aboard your van, head along the breathtaking coastline as, you make your way towards the fishing village of Ponta do Sol for a short guided visit. Next, you will head into the Valley of Ribeira Grande, where you will enjoy a lunch at a local restaurant.

Then, you will reboard your vehicle and pass along the former trading route, where you will have spectacular views into different valleys, and formations of the volcanic mountains. One of the highlights of this road is the view into the Cova crater, which is the birthplace of this island. Today, the rich soil found in the crater is perfect for farming and the crater floor is spotted with different types of agriculture, including corn.

After making your way over the mountain ridge, you will begin your descent onto the other side of the island and back to the harbour in Porto Novo.

Finally, you will take the ferry for the cruise back to Mindelo and your ship.

The transportation used is local and do not have air-conditioning nor a PA-system. This excursion involves approximately 0.6 miles (1 km) of walking over uneven terrain with some steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Participants must be in good physical condition. Above the clouds of La Palma

Although it is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries, La Palma is exceptionally steep for its size. A ridge crosses the center of the island from north to south and the entire mountain range exceeds 2000 meters in altitude.

From the pier, you will continue to the highest point of La Palma, the "Roque de Los Muchachos", located on the northern side of the "Caldera de Taburiente" National Park, at an altitude of 2,426 meters. It was designated a national park in 1954 because of its immense scientific importance and its wild and exceptional landscapes.

No matter which direction you look, the enormous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente will always offer you incredible views. This park features one of the biggest craters in the world with a circumference of 28,000 metres, a diameter of 9,000 metres and a depth of 700 metres. It´s lined with a pine tree forest, lava deposits and features furrowed by cool streams.

Before reaching the top, you will see the peculiar scene known as the “Sea of Clouds”. Each visit to Roque de los Muchachos is different, as the clouds are never the same. A photo stop will be made at Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the impressive Caldera de Taburiente.

The next stop will be at Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Centre, which is divided into 4 rooms. The first one, the Welcome Room houses the reception, the auditorium, the store and a large interactive table, where you will discover what makes up the telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Room 1 “The Canary Islands, a window to the Universe”: you will discover the reasons why the Canary Island were strategically chosen to house the most important telescopes in the world. Room 2 “Exploring the Universe”: here, you will dive into the depths of the cosmos, exploring all the corners of science and our Universe. Room 3 “Back to Earth”: in this room you will return to the municipality of Villa de Garafía, where the Visitor Centre is located. You will discover their traditions, their way of life, and their natural and cultural heritage.

After the visit you will have some free time to enjoy the amazing surroundings before heading to the port.

Roque de los Muchachos is located at 2,423 metres above sea level, so this excursion is not recommended for people with respiratory distress and heart problems. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes. Please note that visibility is dependent on weather conditions. If the weather conditions are not good, the roads to Roque de Los Muchachos may be closed.

Natural and religious sanctuaries of Santa Cruz de la Palma

Hiking on the new volcano Tagojaite

On September 19, 2021, a new volcanic crater formed in La Palma. The volcano, previously known as Cumbre Vieja, erupted, completely changing the landscape west of the city and creating the new volcano Tagojaite.

Tajogaite is the name given to an area of the island of La Palma belonging to the municipality of El Paso and located south of Los Romanciaderos, near the Montaña Rajada. The toponym appears frequently from the eighteenth century onwards in local documents related to land ownership, but its use dates back to the time when the Benahoarites inhabited the island.

Hiking on the newly named Tajogaite - cracked mountain - you will almost reach the crater, walking along black ash paths lined with Canary pines.

From there, impressive views of the lava flows and the Aridane Valley await you.

Once back on the bus, you will go to the Mirador de Tajuya to enjoy more amazing views of the volcano and lava flows, before returning to Santa Cruz.

This tour involves approx. 3 mi (5 km) of walking, of which 2 km is slightly uphill, 2 km downhill, with uneven ground throughout. This volcano hike is feasible for everyone, but due to the fresh volcanic ash in two short, steeper sections on the way back it is a bit more strenuous than on the way up. Under no circumstances may guests leave the official route or take volcanic material with them. This tour is limited to 42 participants, who, once at the volcano, will be divided in smaller groups of approx. 14 each. The tour is only available in English.

Kayak at Los Cristianos Beach

Kayaking in Tenerife allows you to discover the island's coastline, with its fascinating variety of landscapes and marine wildlife.

You will meet your kayaking instructor and guide on the pier and take a 20 minute walk with him to Los Cristianos Beach.
There, you will have a safety briefing before boarding your kayak for a nice 2 hour activity accompanied by your professional guide.

From the beach, you will head to the rocks at Palm-Mar, which offer impressive views of cliffs and rock formations, as well as coves, caves and caverns. You will be delighted by the contrast between the deep blue of the sea and the colors of the cliffs.

Then, you will follow your guide to a special place where sea turtles live. You will put on your snorkel gear, jump in the water and go snorkelling with you instructor to try and observe these lovely animals. The snorkelling will last 30 minutes. Palm-Mar's waters are also home to many other species of fish and marine animals.

You will get back on your kayak and continue paddling in Palm-Mar to enjoy Tenerife’s scenery, before paddling back to the beach.

You will leave your material and your instructor and will be free to enjoy some time at the beach or discover the town before heading back to the ship.

The activity will be only carried out with an English-speaking instructor. Passengers must be fit and know how to swim and immerse themselves in water. The average temperature of the water is 19/20°C. We recommend that passengers bring a swimsuit, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, flip flops (or shoes that can go in the water – rubber sole water shoes), a towel, a Lycra or thermal Lycra and change if necessary. We recommend bringing a bottle of water. Please note that timing may vary due to weather conditions. Las Cañadas del Teide

This excursion will take you to the stunning landscapes of Las Cañadas National Park.

Meet your guide and board your coach for a journey through impressive chromatic changes in both landscape and vegetation that are impressive as you travel to Las Cañadas del Teide, which is located inside the crater of Mount Teide. The green backdrop gradually changes to grey, ochre, red and even blue, with the magnificent Mount Teide in the background. The Mount is Spain's highest mountain at 3,718 m above sea level.
On the way up, a few photo stops will be made to immortalize the moment and appreciate the incredible volcanic landscapes and views.

Before entering the national park, you will have a coffee-stop at a local restaurant surrounded by stunning nature and lava rock formations.

The journey continues to Los Roques de Garcia, at the entrance to Las Cañadas del Teide National Park, a protected territory since 1954, which today covers an area of 18,990 hectares.
In June 2007, Unesco awarded it World Heritage status. The national park is actually the interior of the Teide crater and is home to extensive and unique endemic flora and fauna.

Finally, you will stop on the slopes of Mount Teide for a short walk through the lava fields. This is home to one of Tenerife's most photographed and famous icons, El Roque Cinchado (known as God's Finger), a curious lava rock formation that resembles a finger.

After this adventure, you will board your coach to return to the dock and your ship.

This tour involves 1.5 km of walking over flat but uneven surfaces. There are some stairs to negotiate. It is recommended you wear comfortable walking shoes. It is forbidden to remove any stones or plants from the National Park. This excursion will travel up some mountain roads to approximately 7,000 feet above sea level. This tour is not recommended to passengers who suffer from heart problems or have previously undergone heart surgery, pregnant women, and thos suffering from respiratory problems including asthma or infants under the age of 1 year. This tour is subject to weather conditions and its itinerary may vary. A warm jacket is recommended as the temperatures can be cooler at the height reached during this tour.

Santa Cruz History and tapas

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of Tenerife, is located in the northeast of the island.
Among its avenues and parks, the old town is packed with historic buildings and artists' sculptures.

You will meet your guide and board your coach for an hour-long drive to the capital.

From Plaza España, with your guide, you will enjoy a guided walking tour that will give you the opportunity to learn about the history of Santa Cruz. You will pass iconic historic buildings, as well as churches, parks filled with wonderful flora, and sculptures in the streets. You will have the opportunity to appreciate its beauty today and learn about its development and the important role it's played over the centuries, while enjoying its monuments.

Next, you will continue your stroll past the Church of San Francisco, the Plaza del Principe with its romantic garden and get to see the "Chicharro" statue, before passing the provincial Parliament.

You will continue on to the oldest part of the city, after discovering the Guímera Theatre, La Recova, Carta House, and the Church of La Concepción.

Finally, you will end up at a popular bodega in the city's old quarter. Experience the bodega like the "Chicharreros" while enjoying tapas and wine and watching the people around you.

Finally, you will board your coach for a pleasant trip back to the pier and your ship.

Hiking Las Cañadas del Teide

Meet your expert hiking guide on the pier, board your coach and drive through Esperanza Forest, a cool pine forest with sporadic eucalyptus vegetation and tantalizing glimpses of the Teide, Spain’s highest peak.

You are sure to be impressed by the chromatic changes in the landscape on the way to Las Cañadas del Teide National Park.
The park, the largest of the Canary Islands, today covers an area of 18,898 hectares and includes the enormous crater from which the majestic cone of Mount Teide (Pico Teide) emerges, rising to an altitude of 3,718 m. The park consists of a unique landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava that surrounded the Mount. It was declared a national park in 1954, and in 2007, it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.
You will start and finish your hike at Los Roques de Garcia. During the approximately 5km hike, you will marvel at the different views of the lava formations and be impressed by the landscape around you.

After your walk, you will reboard your coach and head to a nearby restaurant for a well-deserved lunch.

Finally, with your head full of images taht seem to have come from another planet, you will drive back to the pier and your coach.

The hiking will be carried out only with an English-speaking guide. Passengers must be in good physical condition and be prepared to walk 5 km over uneven, inclined, uphill and downhill surfaces. Guests are advised to wear comfortable hiking shoes, a wind jacket and loose layered clothing. A parent or guardian must accompany children under the age of 12. Participants should take a backpack with them for belongings and bring enough water to stay hydrated during the hike. It is forbidden to remove any stones or plants from the National Park. Cueva del Viento

You will meet your guide directly on the quay, board your coach and leave the port of Los Cristianos for Icod de los Vinos, located in the north-western part of Tenerife.

Icod de los Vinos is one of the island's main wine-growing regions, with impressive views of Mount Teide.

Today, you will have the unique and exclusive opportunity to visit the interior of the volcanic tube Cueva del Viento - The Cave of the Wind. Its name derives from the great currents of air that occur inside. It boasts the fifth-longest tunnel in the world, with 18 km of explored branching tunnels. It is the largest lava tube in the European Union. The cave is an enormous labyrinthine network of underground passages. Longer lava tubes can only be found in Hawaii.

On your arrival at the Cueva del Viento - Sobrado district, you will first be given a presentation at the visitor centre. Here, you will learn how this unique labyrinth on three different levels was formed 27,000 years ago by lava from the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, at the foot of Mount Teide.
After this introduction, you will be equipped with a helmet, a cold-light lamp and the battery needed to explore the cave. You will be taken to El Viradero, where you will begin your walk through an impressive landscape to reach "Boca del Sobrado", the entrance to the day's adventure. To respect the cave's unique environment and ecosystem, entry is controlled and restricted, which is why the group is limited to a restricted number of participants.

Together with your expert local guide, you will explore the tunnel, which features a wide variety of structures, such as lava stalactites, lava waterfalls, side terraces and lava lakes, among others, as well as exogenous concretions with different compositions. The cave boasts a rich fauna, with a large number of common species.

After this unique underground experience, you will return to daylight and take your bus back to your ship at the port of Los Cristianos.

This tour is only available in English. It is not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia or those with walking difficulties. Access to the cave is restricted to protect the ecosystem. Total walking time is around 2.5 hours. The floor is uneven and the lava surface is rough inside the cave. The tour includes a 1.1 km walk to reach the cave (from 500m to 700m above sea level), a 1h walk inside the cave, and a 1.1 km walk back after the visit. Comfortable walking shoes, comfortable clothing, a jacket, water and snack are recommended.

Walking in Garajonay National park

From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive to the small village of Las Hayas, your starting point for the encounter with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Garajonay National park.

The park covers some eleven percent of the island and is an important source of water for La Gomera. The forest hosts a great diversity of plant species, which are often surrounded by a sea of fog that gives the forest a magical aspect.

The park and peak are named after the doomed lovers Gara and Jonay, a sad story similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. You will pass through the oldest parts of the tropical mountain forest until you reach beautiful, terraced fields and fruit groves.

At the end, you will reach the charming village of Arure where where you will enjoy a tasting of local products at a typical Gomera restaurant.

Then, you will head back to your coach to drive back to your ship.

La Gomera, a scenic panoramic journey

During this shore excursion, enjoy panoramic views and the mystery of La Laguna Grande, situated in the lush Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park!

Leaving San Sebastian, the capital of the island, you will head north to the first viewpoint, Mirador El Rejo, which offers fabulous views over the Hermigua Valley and the neighbouring island of Tenerife, with its impressive Mount Teide.

The tour will continue towards the centre of the island, and you will reach the Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park. It is a subtropical forest, found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable and mild temperatures. The hardwood trees are characterized by evergreen, glossy leaves, reaching up to 20 m in height. Many of the species are endemic to the island, which offers a rich biota of undergrowth plants, invertebrates, birds and bats.

At Laguna Grande you will have the opportunity to enjoy the enchantment of this unique forest. Upon your arrival at Chipude, you will able to enjoy refreshments at the bar.

From San Sebastian, the island’s capital, you will visit Gomera’s most interesting sights.

First, you will head north to the agricultural valley of Hermigua, famous for its banana plantations, where a local ecologic finca is located. Here, you will have the chance to walk through the small botanical garden, with a wide range of floral diversity.
One of its main attractions are the “palmeras guaraperas”, (the Canarian Palm Tree), which produce the famous palm honey. You absolutely must tast this sweet treat! After that, a local artisan will show you how he crafts (by hand) the baskets, using banana leaves, vines and reeds.

Round off your visit to the finca facilities with a tasting of the main dishes and products in La Gomera: gofio and cheese, washed down with a local wine.

Next, you will admire the breathtaking views at the Mirador de Agulo. Surrounded by a massive basalt wall almost 500 meters high, you might even see the nearby island of Tenerife.

On your way to Laguna Grande, you will make a short stop at the Vallehermoso viewpoint, which literally means "beautiful Valley". You will immediately realize the reason it was bestowed such a name.

Botanical Gardens & Monte

Leaving the pier, the tour takes you out towards the eastern borders of Funchal to the Botanical Gardens, one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate. There is a herbarium, as well as terraces and greenhouses with many rare and indigenous plants. The gardens provide an excellent view over Funchal.

After a visit to these gardens, the next stop will be at the cable car station for your ride to the village of Monte. Enjoy the panoramic views over the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in Monte.

The village of Monte (1,677 ft., 550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal; its 18th-century twin-towered-church is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte credited with being the source of many miracles, also inside you will find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. From here, you return back to port.

Levada walk

One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk along one of the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system called levadas. These channels have been dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century, to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through the emerald green paradise valley with captivating views over quaint isolated villages and Camacha. The flower lined levada trickles along underneath a canopy of Eucalyptus and Oak trees. Enjoy the abundant flora and patchwork landscape that makes this walk delightful.

You will firstly be taken to Vale Paraiso to begin the first part of the walk - a gentle stroll, mostly on level ground - to Camacha (2,296 ft, 700 m), where a stop will be made for refreshment before doing the second part of the walk to Rochão.

The picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets is lined by aged buildings, some dating back to the 15th century. A new project called “Arte de Portas Abertas” (Art of open doors) is a public art programme aiming to transform Funchal’s old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalise this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.

You will continue by foot with a visit to the local market “Mercado dos Lavradores”, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, as well as regional products can be found. The lower half of the market is dedicated to fish: depending on the season, you may see fresh tuna or black scabbard fish. A visit to the market is always interesting and varied, and you will catch a glimpse of the day to day life of the Madeiran people. Here you will get the opportunity to taste some local fruits in season.

You will reboard your coach for a 15-minute drive to the Sacred Art museum, housed in the old Episcopal Court of Funchal. This building from the 17th century suffered changes throughout time, mainly in the 18th century. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1955. There are two distinct sections within the museum: Flemish and Portuguese Art (paintings, sculptures and jewellery). You will also visit the Tower to enjoy a panoramic view over the city and harbour before returning to your ship.

Panoramic tour of Lisbon

You will start your tour at the Park Edward VII. This French style elegant park overlooks the lower part of the city as well as the Tagus River surrounded by the hills of São Jorge castle and Bairro Alto.

The tour will take you then to Belém, also known as the Discoveries quarter due to its 16th century monuments.

A photo stop will give you the chance to admire Jeronimos Church & Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 16th century. This monument, with a late gothic (manueline style) architecture is a tribute to the Portuguese Discoveries. It was designed by the Portuguese architect Diogo de Boitaca to commemorate the return of Vasco da Gama from India. The construction began on January 06, 1501 and was completed during the 17th century. The monastery was built on the site of the former chapel Santa Maria de Belém, where Vasco da Gama prayed before sailing towards the African coast to reach India. After this tour, enjoy some free time to taste the famous custard tarts: “Pastéis de Belém”.

As you leave Belém, you will pass ahead the Belém Tower with its lacy Venetian balconies and turreted towers, and the Monument of the Discoveries, an impressive structure dedicated to Henry the Navigator, designed to commemorate the age of the Discoveries.

Arrábida Natural Park

On the way, you will take the 25th April Bridge. Built by the American Steel Company and inaugurated in 1966, it closely resembles the Golden Gate Bridge due to both being suspension bridges of similar colour. After crossing the bridge, you will head to Sesimbra fishing village. You will make a stop at Sesimbra medieval Castle which stands on a cliff over a cove. The view is beautiful.

Your tour will take you to the Arrábida Natural Park. Enjoy a driving tour discovering the unique landscape of this coastal park. Mafra & wine tasting

This splendid long gallery contains 35,000 books, many of which are rare editions, and is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the World.

This tour will take you to the Palace of the Marquis of Alorna, otherwise known as Fronteira Palace, a unique jewel dating back to the 17th century.

The Fronteira Palace is one of the most beautiful 17th century monuments in Lisbon. It holds the largest collection of 17th century “azulejos” (Portuguese tiles), preserved in situ. It was built around 1670 and was used as a second residence and hunting lodge by the Mascarenhas family, before the 1755 Great Lisbon earthquake. The family moved to Benfica in 1755, after their primary residence in Lisbon was destroyed in the disaster.

The palace is an ancient manor house preserved in a form very close to its original design. Classified as a national monument, it is also the home of the descendants of Dom João de Mascarenhas, the first Marquis of Fronteira, who ordered the construction of the palace. The history of the site serves as just one of the many charms of the place, giving it a human touch and contributing to its special atmosphere. It's still owned by the family, one of the most important noble families in Portugal: the House of Alorna and Fronteira.

Day 1 - Dakar

Day 2 - Dakar - Gorée Island

After you breakfast, you will take the direction to the pier to embark on board the ferry for the 25-minute crossing until Gorée island.

Your day will be spent visiting the evocative Gorée Island. Just three kilometres from Dakar, this little island is a haunting reminder of 350 years of the slave trade. Indeed, it was the biggest holding centre for slaves brought in from all over West Africa and has become a symbol and UNESCO World Heritage site.

From Dakar port, take the ferry for the 25-minute crossing. The visit is on foot starting at the House of Slaves, the most visited museum in Senegal which still evokes the poignant reality of one of the darkest periods in the history of the world. You then walk up to the Castle on a rocky plateau covered in fortifications, a reminder of the wars fought between Europeans (English, French, Portuguese and Dutch) to gain control of the island. The Castle offers a fine panoramic view of Dakar. You then cross the island via the market and colourful, picturesque streets.

Not far from the pier, the lunch will be served at a private mansion with local architecture. You will enjoy the famous national dish called "ceebu jën" (thiébou diène) recently included by UNESCO in the list of intagible of humanity. Then depending on time, you will enjoy time at leisure for local artcraft shopping before catching the ferry back to Dakar.

Back to Dakar, you will be transferred to the pier, to embark on board your ship.

Praia & Cidade Velha

Welcome to the largest and most African of the Cape Verde islands. This tour will take you to the heart of the recent capital, Praia, where you will discover the contrast between its history and the modern atmosphere that reigns there.

From the pier, you will meet your guide and drive to "the Plateau". There, you will start your guided walking tour of the historical centre of Praia. You will visit the Ethnological Museum which is located in a historic Portuguese colonial building. Your guide will tell you more about the way of life of the first inhabitants.

Afterwards, you will go to Cidade Velha which you will reach after 30 minutes of driving. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city is the original capital of the Cape Verde Islands and the cradle of the slave trade.

Ribeira Grande, now known as Cidade Velha (“old city”), is the oldest city in Cape Verde Islands and was the first European settlement in the tropics. A colony was founded in 1462 by Antonio de Noli and prospered due to its prominent position in the slave trade. It became a city in 1572 and got a cathedral which was completed late in 1693. The great explorers Christopher Colombus and Vasco de Gama both stopped here on their respective expeditions, Christopher Colombus on his third voyage to the Americas in 1498, and Vasco de Gama on his way to India in 1497.

Before arriving, you will visit the ruins of the old Fort of Real do Sao Filipe, which overlooks the Cidade Velha. It was built in 1590 to protect Ribeira Grande after a devastating attack by the pirate Francis Drake. This defence soon proved insufficient and in 1712 the city was sacked again by the French pirate Jacques Cassart.

Once in the heart of Cidade Velha, you will discover the remains left by the first Portuguese settlers. You will visit its Cathedral, then you will walk along the Rua Banana and the Pelourinho, a pillory dating from the 16th century. Near these picturesque cobblestone streets, you will enjoy a coffee to the sound of the drums of a batuco group that will offer you a traditional dance performance.

After discovering the soul of this island, you will return to the port of Praia and your ship.

After enjoying a stop at a black sand beach and crossing the agricultural valley of the island, Ribeira de Calhau, you will stop inside the small crater of Topim and observe the uninhabited islands of Santa Luzia, Raso and Branco. Your scenic tour through Mindelo will have you discovering the heart of the city. It will take you past the Praia Nova, the Palacio de Povo, down the main street called Rua de Lisboa, and along the bustling Rua de Praia, lined with colourful colonial houses and monuments influenced by the Portuguese and British cultures.

Along the winding roads leading to Monte Verde, the islands tallest peak, you will take pleasure in admiring the variety of colours offered by the island's stones and rock formations. Make your way along the winding roads of Monte Verde, the highest peak on the island, to enjoy a panoramic view of most parts of the island: the city of Mindelo, the long beaches of yellow sand juxtaposing black volcanic rock, and Baia das Gatas, a bay with turquoise waters, famous for its annual music festival that gathers large parts of the country.

During a stop at Praia Grande beach, delight in the sound of the waves of the Atlantic as you walk along the sand, and taste the local sugarcane liqueur called grog. Finally, before returning to Mindelo to hear some of the Cape Verdean music for which the island of Sao Vicente is renowned, you will cross the former agricultural zone that was once vital to the island but which is now reduced due to the lack of rainfall.

Santo Antao, the authentic island

From the pier, board your van for a transfer to the national harbour, from where you will board a ferry for the one-hour ride to the neighbouring island of Santo Antao.

Upon your arrival, you will start your exploration with a panoramic drive along the coast to the greenest, almost tropical valley on the archipelago, the Paúl Valley, 1 ½ hour drive.

Here, you will start a moderate hike through splendid nature and through different plantations, enjoying the lushness of this valley and the friendliness of the population and their rural way of living. This valley is a main provider of the archipelago's produce, which includes bananas, potatoes, lettuce, papaya, mangos and breadfruit.
In the middle of this peaceful scenery, you will take a break to enjoy some of the fresh fruit that you can readily find in here. In this spectacular valley, you will see lots of sugarcane, which is used to make the local liquor, called Grogue. After your hike, you will visit a traditional sugar cane distillery with a "trapiche", a large press. You will have an introduction into the local grogue rum. No visit would be complete without a tasting.

Back aboard your van, head along the breathtaking coastline as, you make your way towards the fishing village of Ponta do Sol for a short guided visit. Next, you will head into the Valley of Ribeira Grande, where you will enjoy a lunch at a local restaurant.

Then, you will reboard your vehicle and pass along the former trading route, where you will have spectacular views into different valleys, and formations of the volcanic mountains. One of the highlights of this road is the view into the Cova crater, which is the birthplace of this island. Today, the rich soil found in the crater is perfect for farming and the crater floor is spotted with different types of agriculture, including corn.

After making your way over the mountain ridge, you will begin your descent onto the other side of the island and back to the harbour in Porto Novo.

Above the clouds of La Palma

Although it is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries, La Palma is exceptionally steep for its size. A ridge crosses the center of the island from north to south and the entire mountain range exceeds 2000 meters in altitude.

From the pier, you will continue to the highest point of La Palma, the "Roque de Los Muchachos", located on the northern side of the "Caldera de Taburiente" National Park, at an altitude of 2,426 meters. It was designated a national park in 1954 because of its immense scientific importance and its wild and exceptional landscapes.

No matter which direction you look, the enormous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente will always offer you incredible views. This park features one of the biggest craters in the world with a circumference of 28,000 metres, a diameter of 9,000 metres and a depth of 700 metres. It´s lined with a pine tree forest, lava deposits and features furrowed by cool streams.

Before reaching the top, you will see the peculiar scene known as the “Sea of Clouds”. Each visit to Roque de los Muchachos is different, as the clouds are never the same. A photo stop will be made at Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the impressive Caldera de Taburiente.

The next stop will be at Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Centre, which is divided into 4 rooms. The first one, the Welcome Room houses the reception, the auditorium, the store and a large interactive table, where you will discover what makes up the telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Room 1 “The Canary Islands, a window to the Universe”: you will discover the reasons why the Canary Island were strategically chosen to house the most important telescopes in the world. Room 2 “Exploring the Universe”: here, you will dive into the depths of the cosmos, exploring all the corners of science and our Universe. Room 3 “Back to Earth”: in this room you will return to the municipality of Villa de Garafía, where the Visitor Centre is located. You will discover their traditions, their way of life, and their natural and cultural heritage.

After the visit you will have some free time to enjoy the amazing surroundings before heading to the port.

Roque de los Muchachos is located at 2,423 metres above sea level, so this excursion is not recommended for people with respiratory distress and heart problems. Hiking on the new volcano Tagojaite

On September 19, 2021, a new volcanic crater formed in La Palma. The volcano, previously known as Cumbre Vieja, erupted, completely changing the landscape west of the city and creating the new volcano Tagojaite.

Tajogaite is the name given to an area of the island of La Palma belonging to the municipality of El Paso and located south of Los Romanciaderos, near the Montaña Rajada. The toponym appears frequently from the eighteenth century onwards in local documents related to land ownership, but its use dates back to the time when the Benahoarites inhabited the island.

Hiking on the newly named Tajogaite - cracked mountain - you will almost reach the crater, walking along black ash paths lined with Canary pines.

From there, impressive views of the lava flows and the Aridane Valley await you.

Once back on the bus, you will go to the Mirador de Tajuya to enjoy more amazing views of the volcano and lava flows, before returning to Santa Cruz.

This tour involves approx. 3 mi (5 km) of walking, of which 2 km is slightly uphill, 2 km downhill, with uneven ground throughout. This volcano hike is feasible for everyone, but due to the fresh volcanic ash in two short, steeper sections on the way back it is a bit more strenuous than on the way up. Under no circumstances may guests leave the official route or take volcanic material with them. Kayak at Los Cristianos Beach

Kayaking in Tenerife allows you to discover the island's coastline, with its fascinating variety of landscapes and marine wildlife.

You will meet your kayaking instructor and guide on the pier and take a 20 minute walk with him to Los Cristianos Beach.
There, you will have a safety briefing before boarding your kayak for a nice 2 hour activity accompanied by your professional guide.

From the beach, you will head to the rocks at Palm-Mar, which offer impressive views of cliffs and rock formations, as well as coves, caves and caverns. You will be delighted by the contrast between the deep blue of the sea and the colors of the cliffs.

Then, you will follow your guide to a special place where sea turtles live. You will put on your snorkel gear, jump in the water and go snorkelling with you instructor to try and observe these lovely animals. The snorkelling will last 30 minutes. Palm-Mar's waters are also home to many other species of fish and marine animals.

You will get back on your kayak and continue paddling in Palm-Mar to enjoy Tenerife’s scenery, before paddling back to the beach.

You will leave your material and your instructor and will be free to enjoy some time at the beach or discover the town before heading back to the ship.

The activity will be only carried out with an English-speaking instructor. Passengers must be fit and know how to swim and immerse themselves in water. Las Cañadas del Teide

This excursion will take you to the stunning landscapes of Las Cañadas National Park.

Meet your guide and board your coach for a journey through impressive chromatic changes in both landscape and vegetation that are impressive as you travel to Las Cañadas del Teide, which is located inside the crater of Mount Teide. The green backdrop gradually changes to grey, ochre, red and even blue, with the magnificent Mount Teide in the background. The Mount is Spain's highest mountain at 3,718 m above sea level.
On the way up, a few photo stops will be made to immortalize the moment and appreciate the incredible volcanic landscapes and views.

Finally, you will stop on the slopes of Mount Teide for a short walk through the lava fields. This is home to one of Tenerife's most photographed and famous icons, El Roque Cinchado (known as God's Finger), a curious lava rock formation that resembles a finger.

After this adventure, you will board your coach to return to the dock and your ship.

This tour involves 1.5 km of walking over flat but uneven surfaces. There are some stairs to negotiate. It is recommended you wear comfortable walking shoes. You are sure to be impressed by the chromatic changes in the landscape on the way to Las Cañadas del Teide National Park.
The park, the largest of the Canary Islands, today covers an area of 18,898 hectares and includes the enormous crater from which the majestic cone of Mount Teide (Pico Teide) emerges, rising to an altitude of 3,718 m. The park consists of a unique landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava that surrounded the Mount. It was declared a national park in 1954, and in 2007, it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.
You will start and finish your hike at Los Roques de Garcia. During the approximately 5km hike, you will marvel at the different views of the lava formations and be impressed by the landscape around you.

After your walk, you will reboard your coach and head to a nearby restaurant for a well-deserved lunch.

Finally, with your head full of images taht seem to have come from another planet, you will drive back to the pier and your coach.

The hiking will be carried out only with an English-speaking guide. Passengers must be in good physical condition and be prepared to walk 5 km over uneven, inclined, uphill and downhill surfaces. Cueva del Viento

You will meet your guide directly on the quay, board your coach and leave the port of Los Cristianos for Icod de los Vinos, located in the north-western part of Tenerife.

Icod de los Vinos is one of the island's main wine-growing regions, with impressive views of Mount Teide.

Today, you will have the unique and exclusive opportunity to visit the interior of the volcanic tube Cueva del Viento - The Cave of the Wind. Its name derives from the great currents of air that occur inside. It boasts the fifth-longest tunnel in the world, with 18 km of explored branching tunnels. It is the largest lava tube in the European Union. The cave is an enormous labyrinthine network of underground passages. Longer lava tubes can only be found in Hawaii.

On your arrival at the Cueva del Viento - Sobrado district, you will first be given a presentation at the visitor centre. Here, you will learn how this unique labyrinth on three different levels was formed 27,000 years ago by lava from the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, at the foot of Mount Teide.
After this introduction, you will be equipped with a helmet, a cold-light lamp and the battery needed to explore the cave. You will be taken to El Viradero, where you will begin your walk through an impressive landscape to reach "Boca del Sobrado", the entrance to the day's adventure. To respect the cave's unique environment and ecosystem, entry is controlled and restricted, which is why the group is limited to a restricted number of participants.

Together with your expert local guide, you will explore the tunnel, which features a wide variety of structures, such as lava stalactites, lava waterfalls, side terraces and lava lakes, among others, as well as exogenous concretions with different compositions. The cave boasts a rich fauna, with a large number of common species.

After this unique underground experience, you will return to daylight and take your bus back to your ship at the port of Los Cristianos.

This tour is only available in English. It is not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia or those with walking difficulties. Access to the cave is restricted to protect the ecosystem. Walking in Garajonay National park

From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive to the small village of Las Hayas, your starting point for the encounter with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Garajonay National park.

The park covers some eleven percent of the island and is an important source of water for La Gomera. The forest hosts a great diversity of plant species, which are often surrounded by a sea of fog that gives the forest a magical aspect.

The park and peak are named after the doomed lovers Gara and Jonay, a sad story similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. You will pass through the oldest parts of the tropical mountain forest until you reach beautiful, terraced fields and fruit groves.

At the end, you will reach the charming village of Arure where where you will enjoy a tasting of local products at a typical Gomera restaurant.

La Gomera, a scenic panoramic journey

Leaving San Sebastian, the capital of the island, you will head north to the first viewpoint, Mirador El Rejo, which offers fabulous views over the Hermigua Valley and the neighbouring island of Tenerife, with its impressive Mount Teide.

The tour will continue towards the centre of the island, and you will reach the Laurisilva Forest in Garajonay National Park. It is a subtropical forest, found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable and mild temperatures. The hardwood trees are characterized by evergreen, glossy leaves, reaching up to 20 m in height. Many of the species are endemic to the island, which offers a rich biota of undergrowth plants, invertebrates, birds and bats.

La Gomera delicacies & views

From San Sebastian, the island’s capital, you will visit Gomera’s most interesting sights.

First, you will head north to the agricultural valley of Hermigua, famous for its banana plantations, where a local ecologic finca is located. Here, you will have the chance to walk through the small botanical garden, with a wide range of floral diversity.
One of its main attractions are the “palmeras guaraperas”, (the Canarian Palm Tree), which produce the famous palm honey. You absolutely must tast this sweet treat! After that, a local artisan will show you how he crafts (by hand) the baskets, using banana leaves, vines and reeds.

Round off your visit to the finca facilities with a tasting of the main dishes and products in La Gomera: gofio and cheese, washed down with a local wine.

Next, you will admire the breathtaking views at the Mirador de Agulo. Surrounded by a massive basalt wall almost 500 meters high, you might even see the nearby island of Tenerife.

On your way to Laguna Grande, you will make a short stop at the Vallehermoso viewpoint, which literally means "beautiful Valley". You will immediately realize the reason it was bestowed such a name.

Botanical Gardens & Monte

Leaving the pier, the tour takes you out towards the eastern borders of Funchal to the Botanical Gardens, one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate. There is a herbarium, as well as terraces and greenhouses with many rare and indigenous plants. The gardens provide an excellent view over Funchal.

After a visit to these gardens, the next stop will be at the cable car station for your ride to the village of Monte. Enjoy the panoramic views over the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in Monte.

The village of Monte (1,677 ft., 550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal; its 18th-century twin-towered-church is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte credited with being the source of many miracles, also inside you will find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. From here, you return back to port.

Levada walk

One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk along one of the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system called levadas. These channels have been dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century, to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through the emerald green paradise valley with captivating views over quaint isolated villages and Camacha. The flower lined levada trickles along underneath a canopy of Eucalyptus and Oak trees. Enjoy the abundant flora and patchwork landscape that makes this walk delightful.

You will firstly be taken to Vale Paraiso to begin the first part of the walk - a gentle stroll, mostly on level ground - to Camacha (2,296 ft, 700 m), where a stop will be made for refreshment before doing the second part of the walk to Rochão.

Funchal & Sacred Art museum

Leaving the pier and driving through the main area of Funchal, your first stop will be the Old Town, one of Funchal’s main tourist hotpots, popular for its historical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic aspects.

The picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets is lined by aged buildings, some dating back to the 15th century. A new project called “Arte de Portas Abertas” (Art of open doors) is a public art programme aiming to transform Funchal’s old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalise this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.

You will continue by foot with a visit to the local market “Mercado dos Lavradores”, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, as well as regional products can be found. The lower half of the market is dedicated to fish: depending on the season, you may see fresh tuna or black scabbard fish. A visit to the market is always interesting and varied, and you will catch a glimpse of the day to day life of the Madeiran people. Here you will get the opportunity to taste some local fruits in season.

You will reboard your coach for a 15-minute drive to the Sacred Art museum, housed in the old Episcopal Court of Funchal. This building from the 17th century suffered changes throughout time, mainly in the 18th century. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1955. There are two distinct sections within the museum: Flemish and Portuguese Art (paintings, sculptures and jewellery). You will also visit the Tower to enjoy a panoramic view over the city and harbour before returning to your ship.

Panoramic tour of Lisbon

From the pier, you will board your coach to discover the main highlights of Lisbon.

You will start your tour at the Park Edward VII. This French style elegant park overlooks the lower part of the city as well as the Tagus River surrounded by the hills of São Jorge castle and Bairro Alto.

The tour will take you then to Belém, also known as the Discoveries quarter due to its 16th century monuments.

A photo stop will give you the chance to admire Jeronimos Church & Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 16th century. This monument, with a late gothic (manueline style) architecture is a tribute to the Portuguese Discoveries. It was designed by the Portuguese architect Diogo de Boitaca to commemorate the return of Vasco da Gama from India. The construction began on January 06, 1501 and was completed during the 17th century. The monastery was built on the site of the former chapel Santa Maria de Belém, where Vasco da Gama prayed before sailing towards the African coast to reach India. As you leave Belém, you will pass ahead the Belém Tower with its lacy Venetian balconies and turreted towers, and the Monument of the Discoveries, an impressive structure dedicated to Henry the Navigator, designed to commemorate the age of the Discoveries.

Finally, you will see the “Praça do Comércio” also known as Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square) and often called “Black Horse Square“ by the English. This is one of the most important squares of Lisbon.

Arrábida Natural Park

From the pier, you will board your coach for a 45-minute drive to Sesimbra.

On the way, you will take the 25th April Bridge. Built by the American Steel Company and inaugurated in 1966, it closely resembles the Golden Gate Bridge due to both being suspension bridges of similar colour. After crossing the bridge, you will head to Sesimbra fishing village. You will make a stop at Sesimbra medieval Castle which stands on a cliff over a cove. The view is beautiful.

Your tour will take you to the Arrábida Natural Park. Enjoy a driving tour discovering the unique landscape of this coastal park. One of the main attractions is the wealth of its indigenous vegetation, one of the reasons which led the Arrábida zone to be considered as a genuine international scientific relic. On the way, you will enjoy some photo stops to admire the white limestone cliffs and sea views.

At the end of your tour, you will head to Azeitão where you will visit a wine cellar and taste local wines made with Moscatel grapes.

Finally, you will return to your ship.

This tour will take you first to the Palace, Monastery and Church of Mafra, which are some of the most imposing buildings in Portugal.

It took 50.000 workmen and 18 years to build, in the 18th century. The church is solely constructed of marble, has six unique organs and some of Europe’s best carillons. The Palace contains - Mafra’s “jewel” which is the library. This splendid long gallery contains 35,000 books, many of which are rare editions, and is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the World.

Your next stop will be a private wine producing “Quinta”. In the early 2000s, when the last strains of the Jampal grape were found, few people knew about it. Today, it is a unqiue wine in the world. You will visit the cellar and taste a selection of six wines, white and red, paired with olive oil and bread.

Fronteira Palace

This tour will take you to the Palace of the Marquis of Alorna, otherwise known as Fronteira Palace, a unique jewel dating back to the 17th century.

The Fronteira Palace is one of the most beautiful 17th century monuments in Lisbon. It holds the largest collection of 17th century “azulejos” (Portuguese tiles), preserved in situ. It was built around 1670 and was used as a second residence and hunting lodge by the Mascarenhas family, before the 1755 Great Lisbon earthquake. The family moved to Benfica in 1755, after their primary residence in Lisbon was destroyed in the disaster.

The palace is an ancient manor house preserved in a form very close to its original design. Classified as a national monument, it is also the home of the descendants of Dom João de Mascarenhas, the first Marquis of Fronteira, who ordered the construction of the palace. The history of the site serves as just one of the many charms of the place, giving it a human touch and contributing to its special atmosphere. It's still owned by the family, one of the most important noble families in Portugal: the House of Alorna and Fronteira.
