Joshua Voss

Joshua Voss

Dr. Joshua Voss is coral reef ecologist, experienced expedition leader, advanced technical diver, and Associate Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. His primary research interests include shallow and mesophotic coral reef ecology, coral health and disease, marine molecular ecology, and marine conservation and management. With an outstanding team of graduate students, technicians, and collaborators, he works to discover, understand, and protect coral reef ecosystems.

A certified advanced trimix rebreather diver and scuba instructor, Dr. Voss has completed over 1800 scientific dives and led more than 40 scientific expeditions across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. He teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate biology and marine science programs at FAU, and has served as Executive Director of NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research, and Technology, as Chair of the Harbor Branch Faculty, and on several state and federal agency advisory boards.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at Elon University in North Carolina, he earned his Ph.D. at Florida International University in Miami. Dr. Voss has been at FAU Harbor Branch since 2007 and lives in Fort Pierce, FL with his wife, Ashley, a high school experiential learning coordinator and instructor with a background in both marine and molecular biology.  Together with their two adventurous and ocean-loving daughters, they enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, snowboarding, diving, and sailing their Tartan 37, Peregrine.
