John Bailly

John William Bailly (b. 1968, UK) is a British-French–American artist and professor based in Lyon and Miami. He is a Faculty Fellow in the Honors College at Florida International University, where he directed the France, Italy, and Spain Study Abroad programs for fifteen years. He currently teaches interdisciplinary seminars on the cultural history of Miami. He received his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale University School of Art and a BA in Art History from FIU.

Bailly’s artistic practice examines history and culture through a transatlantic lens. His large-scale oil paintings and intimate mixed-media works on paper consider how identity is shaped by history, place, and cultural memory. His work has been exhibited at the Zillman Art Museum, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and Texas State University, among other venues in the United States and France.

He was the inaugural Charles Deering McCormick Fellow Artist-in-Residence; the residency was documented in the Emmy-winning film “John William Bailly: In Situ” by Jorge Gonzalez-Graupera. Honors include the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship, a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant, and a Miami-Dade County Individual Artist Grant. In 2007, he collaborated with poet Richard Blanco on Place of Mind. Since 2023, he has lectured on culture and history on cruises throughout the world.
