Dennis Romano
Dennis Romano is a historian of medieval and Renaissance Europe and the Mediterranean, with a specialization in the history of Italy. The Walter Montgomery and Marian Gruber Professor of History emeritus at Syracuse University, he is the author of five books including Venice: The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City, published in 2024 by Oxford University Press. He is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He is an honorary fellow of the Venetian Athenaeum. He has traveled with Smithsonian Journeys numerous times to Sicily where his paternal grandparents were born. An avid gardener, Dennis would have liked to be a landscape architect had he not become a historian.
