While still a modest fishing village only a century ago, Dar es Salaam is now Tanzania’s economic hub and has much evidence of its history. Meaning “House of peace”, the city reveals itself on the shores of the Indian Ocean. In 1857, Majid bin Said, the current Sultan, decided to turn this internal creek into a port and trading post. Today, the National Museum of Tanzania will offer you an overview of the country’s history and its natural environment. Art and local crafts won’t be left out and can be discovered during a walk through the Mwenge district where local crafts reign supreme or at the Tinga Tinga cooperative which perpetuates the Tanzanian style of painting, part of the country’s cultural identity.
