Country Club Casual, or elegant resort wear, is appropriate dress for all evenings aboard The Paul Gauguin. Country Club Casual consists of a dress, or skirt or slacks with a blouse or sweater for ladies, and slacks and collared shirts for gentleman. No ties are required at any time, although gentlemen may opt to wear a jacket to the Captain’s Welcome Reception. Please note that casual wear such as shorts, t-shirts, casual jeans (frayed and/or with holes), baseball caps, flip-flops, and Crocs are not considered appropriate after 6:00 pm in all restaurants and lounges. *Shoes suitable for wearing in the water—whether they are reef shoes, sneakers, or old sandals—are imperative for water-based activities. There are corals, urchins, and other marine life that can cause painful cuts and injuries that can be prevented by bringing footwear from home. There is limited opportunity for purchase in the South Pacific. Note that flip-flops are not suitable for this function.

Diving & initiation dive
Supervision of the dives
Your dives will be led by your PONANT instructor. He will take care of your safety and that all goes smoothly. On some diving sites, as in natural reserves or if the local regulations require it, a local guide will escort the diving.
Level required for scuba diving on this cruise
The minimum level required for scuba diving on this cruise is 1 star CMAS or the PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). The certification card, the diving log book and a recent medical certificate (less than 12 months) must be presented at the beginning of the cruise to our main diving instructor.
Process of the dives (certified divers)
The instructor reserves the right to check divers’ ability for maximum safety. As we will dive in remote places, the dives will be done without decompression stop. A safety stop of 3 minutes at 5 metres will be mandatory. The depth that can be reached will depend on the certification of the divers:
- For those with PADI Open Water Diver certificate (or equivalent), the maximum depth can be up to 20 metres.
- If two Stars CMAS or PADI Advanced Open Water Divers (or equivalent) wish to dive together independently, they must have a briefing first. They must have dive computers and are allowed to go to a maximum depth of 20 metres.
Process of the initiation dives (novice divers)
Before your initiation dive, your instructor will show you the equipment and will explain to you how to communicate underwater using hand gestures and how to breathe through a regulator. Once in the water, equipped with your material, you will learn how to breathe through your regulator on the surface for a couple of minutes. When your instructor feels you are ready, he will immerse you in water for about 20 minutes to a depth of 6 metres maximum.
Duration of the dives
The diving activity lasts from 2 to 3 hours, which includes the journey to the diving site and the diving. This duration may vary according to the site, the level of divers, weather conditions and the number of participants. For experienced divers, the duration of dives varies between 35 and 60 minutes depending on the site, the diver’s experience and consumption.

Transfer from the pier to Fare Maeva for an easy test drive on the ATV quads.
Then start the exciting island exploration by discovering the coast of the Motu Maeva with its white sandy beaches, Marae Manunue (an ancient Polynesian temple). Stop for a refreshing coconut drink at chez 'Nini' before continuing for some snorkeling at the Sofitel Heiva's beach.
Afterwards the tour will take you past Fare Potee and Marae Rauhuru and the ancient Fish Traps in Lake Fauna Nui, and then onto the Sacred Eels at Faie before stopping at Belvedere for photo-opportunity of the Maroe Bay and the ship.

Visit archaeological sites, sacred blue-eyed eels, a black pearl farm, and an easy 40-minute snorkel on this land and sea tour of Huahine.
Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Head around the majestic bay where the m/s Paul Gauguin is anchored, then ascend the island's steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay and take a photo with the ship in the background. After, a stop will be made to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.
Continue your adventure along the lake Fauna Nui to Maeva, the most extensive archaeological site in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish traps still in use today restored by archaeologists.
Afterwards, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery”, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see their unique blue pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. The pottery is available for purchase, and refreshments will be served at the pearl farm.
Cruise the lagoon for a short trip on a regular boat and a snorkel stop to Motu Te Tiare. Enjoy the turquoise lagoon and tropical fish with your experienced local guide.

Your spectacular excursion starts with a friendly introduction from your expert anthropologist/archaeologist guide, who has first-hand experience working on the sites you will visit.
Boarding "Le Truck", French Polynesia's famous local style bus, you will depart from Maroe Village on the small island of Huahine Iti, crossing the bridge to Huahine Nui, or 'big island'. Here you will drive past lush green valleys and turquoise lagoon through the capital town of Fare, where Captain James Cook sojourned on his visits to the island.
Your first stop is Maeva village, considered to be one of French Polynesia's most important archaeological areas and home to the largest pre-historic habitation site in Polynesia. During your walk through the village, you will explore the archaeological sites along the lake shore and the Fare Pote'e Museum. You will learn about Polynesian origins and migrations, traditional society, religion, botany, European explorers and get a first-hand look at various traditional tools, handicrafts and artifacts.
You will continue on to Mata'ire'a hill, just above the Village of Maeva and home to more than 200 stone structures, including marae, agricultural terraces, house foundations, fortification walls and burial platforms.
Your next stop, via "Le Truck", is a local family run vanilla plantation where you will have the opportunity to purchase various vanilla products. Continuing on, you will stop to see and learn about the 500 year old fish traps that thanks to restoration work are used again today by the people of Maeva Village.

Departing from Maroe pier after your brief refresh course on how to handle an e-bike, you will head toward the eastern part of Huahine Iti with the goal of completing the 27 km around the smaller Huahine Island with your guide providing you explanations.
During your tour, several stops will be proposed with different viewpoints. You will discover the archaeological site (marae) Anini as well as a visit to a traditional pareo painting workshop.

Depart the pier aboard a motorized outrigger canoe for the 10-minute ride to Poerani, a black pearl farm. The vanilla industry is the island's most important business, followed closely by the production of black pearls. At the black pearl farm, you will learn all about the most beautiful jewel of French Polynesia: the magnificent black pearl. This informative stop will help you understand the value of these lustrous jewels in these islands – and around the world.
Continue on to a small motu for an opportunity to snorkel in its crystal-clear water. This motu is located close to a pass where experienced snorkeler can observe the drop-off of the reef. Don your snorkeling gear and enter the water, where you will see wonderful underwater fauna and a myriad of tropical fish swimming around you.
Following your snorkeling session, you will embark the canoe for the return ride to the Motu Mahana for Paul Gauguin's Beach BBQ.

After a brief tender boat ride to the pier, you will be met by your local guide and "Le Truck".
You will start exploring this scenic island, known as the Vanilla Island, by first visiting a Vanilla Plantation. You will have a brief tour of the grounds of the plantation and a presentation into farming and cultivation of this precious spice.
Afterwards you will continue your guided tour and you will learn about the history, the legends and present-day life of Taha'a. There will be a number of photo stops along the route.
Your final stop will be at the 'Motu Pearl Village' where you will find out all about the creation of the Tahitian Black Pearl and enjoy refreshments and local fruits in season. After the visit you will be transferred by boat directly to Motu Mahana.

Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha'a.
Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkeller spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkelling guide closing up on the group. This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral.
Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkelling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for the ride across one of Taha'a's highest mountains. Along the way, your guide will point out sights of interest, and a stop will be made at a scenic viewpoint to learn about the traditional uses of local plants and trees.
The island of Taha'a is often called Vanilla Island, and you will learn about this fragrant spice while visiting a small family plantation. Afterwards, you will visit a small black pearl farm to learn how these treasures are cultivated and harvested. Explore the island paradise of Bora Bora during this scenic orientation tour via Le truck. For a long time, this picturesque mode of transport has been the emblematic means of transport in Polynesia, especially on the Society Islands.
Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. You will also have an opportunity to buy some local, hand-painted pareos. Depart the pier in Vaitape (or Anau) aboard an outrigger canoe for a scenic ride in the Bora Bora lagoon (weather permitting). You will then continue to the Lagoonarium, with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. Only one guest pilots the plane from the start to the end of the flight as no seats exchange is allowed. The maximum number of guests per flight is 3 (1 instructor, 1 pilot (guest) and 2 passengers), the maximum combined weight per group is 210Kg/460 lbs. From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea's waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves.
Dr. Michael Poole's team will take you on this exciting and educational boat-based eco-tour where you can observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkeler, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales. You can also bask in the dramatic beauty of Moorea and learn about its geology.
Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater.
Getting into the water is not obligatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome. In February 2019 Dr. Poole and his research and conservation efforts on humpback whales were featured on Animal Planet and ABC TV. His team operates with the utmost respect in the presence of these incredible giants. Go for an authentic, small-group cruise on the island of Moorea to discover the marine fauna of its lagoon.
You will first sail into Opunohu or Cook Bay in search of spinner dolphins which generally follow the coasts. A first snorkeling stop is then planned on a shallow sandbank in the lagoon to meet stingrays and blacktip sharks. This activity is accessible to all ages without any particular physical aptitude. A second snorkeling stop will take place at the coral canyon. In this unique place, you can let yourself drift with the current into slightly deeper waters. It is recommended to know how to swim and to use snorkeling equipment (fins, mask and snorkel), however, for those who wish, it is always possible to stay in the boat to observe green turtles and other species of fish multi-colored. Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesian's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Your guide will then drive you across a large plantation filled with vanilla, bananas, grapefruits, and oranges, and will acquaint you with the island's diverse flora and fauna. Next, you will continue to an open-air temple, or marae.

In the heart of dense vegetation, you will discover the Upeke archaeological site, one of the largest ceremonial centres in French Polynesia. This fascinating religious complex is made up of several platforms (or paepae), a large Marquesan meeting place (or tohua) and a tiki. Accompanied by your guide, uncover the secrets of this site, which stretches over three hectares. On the way back, you will be able to discover the hamlet of Taaoa.

Early in the morning, you will set off to discover the island’s main village, Atuona. Day 5 - Hiva Oa/Nuku Hiva
Morning transfer to Hiva Oa Airport and check-in for your flight to Nuku Hiva. The expected flight time is one hour.
On arrival, you will be transferred to Le Nuku Hiva by Pearl Resorts 3*, a Relais & Châteaux hotel. The 90-minute journey aboard an 4x4 wheel vehicle promises splendid panoramas. Nuku Hiva will show you its most beautiful landscapes, which are incredibly diverse! The desert lands give way to primary forests and Caribbean pine groves, and the volcanic cliffs soar majestically before you.

At the start of the afternoon, you will visit the island’s main village, Taiohae. A walk will lead you to the archaeological site of Koueva, a former ceremonial platform belonging to the great warrior chief Pakoko in the past. Restored for the Marquesas Islands Arts Festival, this tohua helps travellers gain a greater understanding of the wealth and diversity of Marquesan culture. Not far from there, you will be able to explore the craft ‘Fare’, a local market where the island’s craftspeople show and sell their products.

Day 6 - Nuku Hiva
This day will be spent discovering the Hatiheu Valley, on the northern coast of the island of Nuku Hiva.
From the hotel, you will climb aboard your 4x4 wheel vehicle to head for Muake Pass. Your trip will feature extraordinary views over Taiohae Bay and Taipivai Valley, renowned as one of Polynesia’s largest coconut groves and made famous by Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. You will arrive at Kamuihei to visit the restored archaeological site. As you listen to your guide, you will go on a real journey back in time. Day 7 - Nuku Hiva
This morning, set off to meet a local sculptor and discover the art of Marquesan sculpture. In his workshop, the master sculptor will present this ancestral art, which he is gently perpetuating. It will also be an opportunity to practise your artistic talents on a piece of wood from the islands.

During this afternoon dedicated to the Scents & Culture of Fenua, get comfortable on board an air-conditioned van, heading for the Cosmetology Laboratory located about an hour away.
On the way, drive through the city of Papeete and its suburbs to gradually enter the wilder nature of the South coast of the island of Tahiti. Once at the Laboratory, discover the real Monoi de Tahiti, a natural blend of virgin coconut oil and Tiare flowers used by the Polynesian people for over 2000 years. From the flower on its shrub to the bottling, discover the whole manufacturing process and learn about its multiple uses.
Then head for the Museum of Tahiti and its Islands. Enter in a completely renovated, modern and interactive museum that reopened its doors to the public in early 2023. A real tribute to Polynesian culture with its 1400 m² (15,069.46 sq ft) exhibition room and its different areas to visit freely. Ancient canoes, art objects, imposing sculptures, utensils of daily life and even some exceptional pieces lent by the Quai Branly Museum, the Cambridge Museum and the British Museum... so many witnesses of the cultural wealth of our islands.

Day 3 - Papeete
Check out after an included breakfast and you will be transferred to the city center, to discover downtown Papeete.
Join the market in an air-conditioned van, stroll from stand to stand to meet the local vendors and artisans. Pearl and mother-of-pearl jewelry, wood and stone sculptures, baskets and various woven objects, pareos and local dresses… but also florists, market gardeners, fishermen, butchers... your guide will invite you to taste some authentic products from the three main culinary cultures of the country: Tahitian, Chinese and French (seasonal fruits, salty or sweet snacks, fish dishes, etc...)

Visit archaeological sites, sacred blue-eyed eels, a black pearl farm, and an easy 40-minute snorkel on this land and sea tour of Huahine.
Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Head around the majestic bay where the m/s Paul Gauguin is anchored, then ascend the island's steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay and take a photo with the ship in the background. After, a stop will be made to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.
Continue your adventure along the lake Fauna Nui to Maeva, the most extensive archaeological site in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish traps still in use today restored by archaeologists.
Afterwards, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery”, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see their unique blue pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. Boarding "Le Truck", French Polynesia's famous local style bus, you will depart from Maroe Village on the small island of Huahine Iti, crossing the bridge to Huahine Nui, or 'big island'. Here you will drive past lush green valleys and turquoise lagoon through the capital town of Fare, where Captain James Cook sojourned on his visits to the island.
Your first stop is Maeva village, considered to be one of French Polynesia's most important archaeological areas and home to the largest pre-historic habitation site in Polynesia. During your walk through the village, you will explore the archaeological sites along the lake shore and the Fare Pote'e Museum. You will learn about Polynesian origins and migrations, traditional society, religion, botany, European explorers and get a first-hand look at various traditional tools, handicrafts and artifacts.
You will continue on to Mata'ire'a hill, just above the Village of Maeva and home to more than 200 stone structures, including marae, agricultural terraces, house foundations, fortification walls and burial platforms.

After a brief tender boat ride to the pier, you will be met by your local guide and "Le Truck".
You will start exploring this scenic island, known as the Vanilla Island, by first visiting a Vanilla Plantation. You will have a brief tour of the grounds of the plantation and a presentation into farming and cultivation of this precious spice.
Afterwards you will continue your guided tour and you will learn about the history, the legends and present-day life of Taha'a. There will be a number of photo stops along the route.

Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha'a.
Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkeller spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkelling guide closing up on the group. This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral.
Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkelling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for the ride across one of Taha'a's highest mountains. Along the way, your guide will point out sights of interest, and a stop will be made at a scenic viewpoint to learn about the traditional uses of local plants and trees.
The island of Taha'a is often called Vanilla Island, and you will learn about this fragrant spice while visiting a small family plantation. Depart the pier in Bora-Bora via motorboat for the brief transfer to the hydraulic scooter platform. Upon arrival, you will meet your dive instructor/guide, who will brief you on the scooter, equipment, and safety procedures. Operating the scooter is very simple; riders only need to step onto the scooter and steer it using a small wheel. The Aquabike underwater scooter is equipped with dive tanks, providing continuous airflow, so your head stays completely dry. Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. You will then continue to the Lagoonarium, with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life, including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Depart the pier for the boat transfer to the base. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and riding instructions from your guide, then embark your two-seat catajet for a 1.5-hour ride in an idyllic lagoon on Moorea. From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea's waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves.
Dr. Michael Poole's team will take you on this exciting and educational boat-based eco-tour where you can observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkeler, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales. You can also bask in the dramatic beauty of Moorea and learn about its geology.
Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater.
Getting into the water is not obligatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome. In February 2019 Dr. Poole and his research and conservation efforts on humpback whales were featured on Animal Planet and ABC TV. His team operates with the utmost respect in the presence of these incredible giants. Depart the pier for the drive to the Intercontinental Moorea Resort & Spa. Upon arrival, you will meet your instructor, then be outfitted with your wet suit and water shoes before embarking on a 10-minute boat ride inside the majestic lagoon of Moorea. The crew will anchor the boat off the coast of Motu Fareone or inside the lagoon in Papetoai (depending on sea and weather conditions). Your certified diving instructor will explain your safety and diving instructions, help you put on your helmet, and assist you with descending the ladder into the crystal-clear water.
You will then commence your 30-minute underwater adventure at a depth of 12 feet. A first snorkeling stop is then planned on a shallow sandbank in the lagoon to meet stingrays and blacktip sharks. This activity is accessible to all ages without any particular physical aptitude. A second snorkeling stop will take place at the coral canyon. In this unique place, you can let yourself drift with the current into slightly deeper waters. Days 2 & 3 – Bora Bora
Located on Motu Piti Aau, a small coral island on the barrier reef, The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa is an eco-friendly jewel. The Deep Ocean Spa offers luxurious treatments utilizing nutrients extracted from the deep-sea water of the South Pacific. After an included breakfast, spend your days at leisure enjoying the resort’s stunning setting. Lounge by the pool, skim across the lagoon on a rented sailboat, kayak or paddleboard—or sign up for a SCUBA course to discover the graceful marine life inhabiting the lagoon.

Day 4 – Bora Bora/Papeete
Check out after an included breakfast and catch your boat transport to the Bora Bora Airport, where you will board your flight back to Papeete. Upon arriving Tahiti, a local representative will assist you in transporting to your Day Room at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa 4*.
Check-in and then relax in your room or take advantage of the resort’s amenities. Located on a vibrant blue lagoon, the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa is the ideal base to relax as you transition from vacation to your journey home. You will have access to all hotel amenities including two freshwater swimming pools, a beach, and an overwater restaurant. If time and availability allow, there is also a spa and a dive center at additional cost.
Lunch and dinner are on your own. You will then be transferred to the Faa’a International Airport in time for check-in for the PAUL GAUGUIN Cruises selected flight.

The included luggage allowance for inter-island flights is: 23 kg (50 lb) per person, maximum 3 items, the dimensions of which should not exceed length + width + height = 150 cm (59 in) for the Air Tahiti Papeete/Bora Bora/Papeete flights. One carry-on, the weight and size of which must not exceed 5 kg (11 lb) and 45 x 35 x 20 cm (17.6 in x 13.7 in x 7.8 in). The cabins and overhead lockers on the planes are not big enough to take extra items such as laptops, cameras, etc. All your cabin effects must fit into your luggage items, as described above.
